he351ve exhaust outlet, downpipe clarification

Postby IrishChamp » Thu May 16, 2013 9:27 am

ok, I've been trying to sort out which downpipe to get. I've found an actual he351 1st gen downpipe but its listed as 4.4" flange, I've measured the he351ve outlet flange size and its NOT 4.4". outermost OD of the lip where the v band clamp would attach is 4 1/16", OD of the shelf/area that the factory elbow slides onto is 3 3/16-3 1/4", ID is 2 7/8"
I've tried emailing, calling and posting in the merchants supporting vendor forum section of the vendor who carries the downpipe with no luck so I'm hoping someone here will have some insight.
there is an hx40 downpipe for sale, seller says the outer most OD is 4'even and the id is 3 3/4". this sounds like it would work, the he351ve v band clamp should cover and grab onto the lip of the hx40 downpipe, however the ID of the hx40 dowmpipe is larger so it will not sit/slide over on anything like the factory cast elbow. so if I can use the he351ve v band clamp and the hx40 downpipe I'm golden.
I'm anxious to get this done so any insight would be greatly appreciated.

The down pipe listed for the 351, is that to be used in conjunction with the cast elbow???

your guess is as good as mine. no 4.4" dimensions there either.
Cast Elbow ID at downpipe end is 3 11/16", OD is 4" and outer OD where v band clamp covers is 5 1/4"

When I installed my he351ve I bought a diamond eye 6.7 down pipe flange for 4" exhaust and made the DP my self. It mounts to the cast elbow.

I'm prety sure the outlet on the he351cw is different, though I could be wrong.

I don't know either if they're the same or not, where did you buy the flange?

4.4 sounds like its for the he351cw which btw looks nothing like the pictures you've posted
I'd try a morman flange on that....

Source automotive sells a flange that bolts right up to it, got mine from there, works great. I think I also saw DAP sells them for a little cheaper.

I've been waiting for a call, email, or pm from DAP for over a week. At this point I think I'll avoid them at all cost. They do have an he351 downpipe and a flange but neither specify whether it uses the case elbow or not or for ve or cw turbo and the downpipe lists the flange as 4.4", that's where all my confusion is arising. No specific info and no customer service.
Is this the adapror ? Does not say he351ve, you're using this with a ve turbo, with or without the cast elbow?

Here is the dp, I'd assume it uses the same adaptor but states 4.4", this would be my preference, one piece to bolt right up.

I finally heard back from DAP, sounds like the hx40 dp is the right one, as close as it gets anyway.

This is the one I got and it bolts right up to the turbo, like your above pics, not the cast elbow. I looked at the DAP site u listed and it is vague. I called source when I ordered mine because I wasn't sure if it was meant for elbow or not, they answered right away and the guy I talked to knew his stuff. It's a good piece, fits tight, you'd just have to adapt your down pipe, it's meant for 4" but I used 3.5". I wanna say 3.25" is about as small as you could weld up to it, I'm sure you have bigger.

Looking back at the DAP site, it says for 04.5 trucks on up or hx40. I'm guessing it won't work, looks different then mine.

Is it a weldable flange on the dp side or does it use a v clamp?

I'm not sure I understand the question, it's a weldable flange that uses a v band, so yes to both I guess.

I guess I'm just wondering what downpipe you attached it to and how?
