Operation - "keep it from blowing up"

Postby RCCUMMINS89 » Tue Jun 25, 2013 9:03 am

Well.......................she's knocking.

She's getting put back to stock timing (well backed all the way off) and de tuned to the point of 25psi wot. Then cross the fingers while I get something put together and hope it lasts til I am able to swap in a fresh short block.

All performance stuff is currently going out the window.

Throw a bottle or two of lucas in it and baby it, 25 psi is probably still too much for a dying engine. You gonna balance or fluidampr the new one?

Well...... WORSE case scenario............I buy another block.

A POS car out here is pretty much the same cost as I'll be into a short block anyways. So, she's getting driven LOL.

I mean............it is only an engine.

As an update.............operation "sucks ass" is finished. Truck is backed all the way off for timing (still sounds like a sled puller, LOL) power screw is backed out as far as it'll go...........yes that's right, the o ring started showing.

This puts my would be idle screw at about a "stock" position (I merely shortened the rod).

Oh, guess what...............no knock this morning????????????????? it's a come and go knock. It came and went a few times yesterday.

you think maybe you have an injector that opens too soon or hanging up every now and then? or are you sure its a rod/wrist pin knock?

What he said ^
Disappearing noises usually mean wrist pins, they are heat sensitive. Could be an injector......I got some 7x10s I'll let you borrow

That's why I"m 99% sure it's a wrist pin.

As an update...............

With my timing backed off where it is, I CAN'T get it to knock sitting in neutral. I still hear it sometimes when driving and tipping just right.

It's got to be a wrist pin. It's not an injector, when I could get it to do it at an idle it was CLEARLY coming out of the block area. Can't hear it below the truck. Only leads to about one thing.

So...............it ONLY does it when it's warmed up and driving.

It comes and goes..............sounds now like a tap yet does it quickly like a rattle. I would swear it was the flexplate if it was an auto. (but of course it only does it now when I'm driving and it has to be fully up to operating temp.

Ok, WTF>....................?

this is what I've got going on............................

It would do it at an idle when the timing was up higher (points to injector knock)(but it came out of the block/bellhousing area.

Now that I have backed the timing off it won't do it at an idle or out of gear..............ONLY does it when driving.

Only does it when the vehicle is up to operating temp and with just the right throttle input

Sounds like a ruler on a desk but not nearly that loud. It does it VERY fast, more than if one cylinder was doing it. Does it quickly and without rhythm..........like a rattle.

wtf? ideas?

so, it changes with temperature, timing, and load

Well............it "SHOULDN'T" be making noise with the clutch out. I mean with the clutch in it's BAD, but to be expected. I would also think I could do it out of gear in neutral with a free rev. But, also how would timing change it. Oh, and also it would do it in neutral with more timing.(when hot)

I hate noises that change and you can't just walk over there and go up.........that' what it is.
