To swap or not to swap?

Postby rockbuggy4x4 » Fri Jul 19, 2013 12:24 pm

So its getting closer to the time when I get back home. And I'll have a little less then a week at home home till I drive to Michigan to pick up my crew cab. Now there are some issues that are gonna need some attention before I head out on my journey (such as the trans and gauges), but I'm wondering if it'll be worth swapping my H1C for my new HX35? I'm gonna be putting my new 3 piece exhaust manifold on since it's already drilled and tapped for the EGT probe. And if I have time, I may put on the new LPPLP, fuel pin, and 3200 rpm spring. Unfortunately, I'll have to suffer with no AC.

I'd swap..........hx35 is a heck of a lot better.

Oh, and your injectors should ship out on Tuesday.

Sweet!! Would the HX35 be better for the interstate driving? That's what confuses me. I'm pretty sure the hx has the 16cm exhaust housing.

Well, stock it has a 12 on it. If it does have a 16, then yes it'll be better for interstate driving.

If not, the stock turbo will net better fuel economy than the hx35 on the interstate

Yea, that's what I thought. I'll double check to see which one it is.

Not really. Last summer I commuted 45 minutes up the interstate with the small H1C and this summer I have the HX and an intercooler. Same route this summer nets within 1 mpg of last summer. This is 1 mpg over 120 gallons, so it's not a fluke. I can't prove the HX cost me 1mpg. I'm blaming it on a dying 727 and bouncing on and off the fan in this wonderful 90* weather.

Since I've been there, I say go with the HX.

I agree...........I'm going off what the majority claim with the above.

I've always gotten the same interstate mpg, no matter the turbo.

Caleb, did you see any change in EGTs? That's what I'm mainly concerned about. I don't have an intercooler either.
How do I tell the difference between the 12, 14, and 16 cm housing?

It's not LIKELY you have it, but some medium/heavy duty vehicles did get a 14cm2 wastegated housing on an HX35.
Don't hold your breath, though. ;)

If its gated Id say it is a 12. Not many will spend the coin for a wastegated 14 or 16 since they are pricey.

I don't know what it did to EGTs because I don't have a pyrometer.

If you don't have an intercooler, I've heard the fab work is a bit of a pain. I already had an intercooler when I put on the HX, so I don't know for sure.

It is waste-gated. I could've swore it said it was a 16cm housing, but I can't find it now, so I could be wrong. So, if it is the 12cm housing, flip a coin to see which one the use? As far intercooler, I'm putting a PS 7.3 IC on when I do my build (that'll be fun to plumb with the compounds).

The 14 gated housings are OEM on certain medium duty trucks, as I said before.
I sold a 14cm wastegated housing to Ellis a couple years ago, which was removed from an HX35 from a Ford bus.
