Compounds on the 6.7?

Postby Mark Nixon » Mon Jul 22, 2013 1:32 pm

Okay, so I go to the scrappers today and there's a Mack sitting there with an S300 on it, so I buy the turbo, downpipe and air intake.
Got it home and did some measuring and looking, find it's basically an S-366 with a 1.36 A/R (18cm2) housing.
I realize the 6.7 is a full 50 cubic inches bigger, but I have my doubt that this turbo would light very well, even with 7x16 injectors, so I looked around and have seen that it has been used as a big turbo charger on compounds.

I have numerous (oem) options for a small charger, as follows:

1992 H1C 18.5cm non-gated housing (Least likely)
1995-1997 6 blade HX35 w/a 12cm gated housing.
1998-2002 7 blade HX35 w/a 12cm gated housing.
HE341 w/a 9cm gated housing.
HE351cw w/a cm gated housing.

In your opinion(s) would any of the smaller turbos work in conjunction with the large turbo mentioned above?

Mark.

I got to thinking Mark............... do you have the room to deck the block and therefore increase the compression?

It would make those injectors burn cleaner and also help with the spray angle. Just a thought..........

As far as the turbos.......IMO it wouldn't make a good combo, but I haven't dabbled in the larger 6.7 stuff and therefore don't know the first hand differences in behaviors.

I was going to have a clean up cut done to both, the head and the block.
It was mainly the block that concerned me, because I have seen comments about the 6.7 having head gasket issues due to machining.

Which turbo bothers you, the little one or the big one?

I'd considered (briefly, in a demented state :D ) running a pair of split manifolds and 2 HE351cws, for a TWIN set-up.

What concerns me is the 366, IMO just too small for it.

For a low pressure turbo? I guess it's not if you're sticking with only 300-350rwhp.........but then why would you need twins?

IMO, the gains just wouldn't be worth the effort. But I have used the IMO about 12 times so far (which really isn't me) and it's for good reason.

I've seen a few guys running S400's as singles on common rail trucks. I think that 366 with a .90 exhaust housing would work fine as a single.
