Pump Mods

Postby tradtke » Thu Aug 08, 2013 7:08 pm

Alright so over the weekend last weekend I installed some gauges and also turned my fuel ratio screw in some more. My boost maxes out at about 25 psi and when I hammer on it I can get it to climb to about 1300 degrees. But when I rev it in neutral the rpms really seem to hang around in the higher range. I just ordered a 366 spring and should be getting it early next week. Is it possible that this will stop it from hanging around like this? What else is causing this?

On another note, I've been thinking about pulling the AFC lever while I'm inside the pump for the spring swap. Anybody else done this? What kind of egts are you getting? How much more boost did you get? Did you Luke it?

Make sure the throttle snaps back all the way back to the idle position with the engine running. If it isn't make sure the return sping is on correctly or add another spring. It will be a pita to drive without the afc lever with anything bigger than stock injectors. Even with stock injectors it will be really smoky before the turbo spools if you give it slightly too much pedal. It will flow a few hp worth of fuel more, but imo not worth it. And if the throttle still hangs you may have to turn the pump down slightly. 1300 is as hot as you want to go anyway.

1300 is not hot for short runs. I've see 1600 to 1800 and its still running fine. Now 1600 is hot, I know, but for short runs it shouldn't hurt anything.

With a stronger afc spring I got faster spool up so no afc will make it really suck to drive.

What's considered a short run?

That's up to you. In my opinion, that would be 1/4 mile empty or 300 feet with a sled on your tail.

Cummins rated these engines for 1250* EGT continuous.
