366 spring install question

Postby Farmboy » Tue Sep 17, 2013 9:24 am

Ok so last night I descided to install my 366 spring. I was using this as a guide:

http://dens-site.net/Dodge_CTD/Governor ... index.html

and I get down to the part where you move the low idle screw and remove the rear allen bolt........ and that is where it all stopped.. His picture shows about 3/4" of clearance between the AFC and the intake plate (or more)... I might have 3/16" if you really stretch it... so is my timing advanced that far????

At any rate, how do I get to those two items without any room? I thought about rotating the pump towards the fender, but I couldn't get to the top bolt on it either...

Any help would be appreciated..

On a side note: adjusted the star wheel, turned and ground a little on the pin.... WOW! should have done that a long time ago.. so much snappier..

*edit* I will try to snap a pic this evening..

the easiest way is to rotate the pump, but beings you cant get to the top bolt. i had bent an allan wrench in about 3 different spot to reach it a little easier. i have since lost it so i cant get a pic of it for you. a long shank, ball end allan may be easier.

A ball end Allen wrench is pretty much a necessity for opening the pump top. IIRC its a 5mm that you need.

I can't even get to the lock nut on the low idle screw. that is what was really stopping me.

Use a punch to break that lock nut loose.

I used a prick punch to pop the nut on the low idle screw loose. A 12" or so long screw driver can weave through and behind the non-IC injector lines to back the screw out. I think the IC injector lines make this a lot easier. Reinstall that screw backwards, as in let the throttle arm rest on the nut. bgilbert showed me that. Makes it a whole lot easier next time.

A ball end allen key would be ideal, but I didn't have that so I used a allen key socket and a swivel to get the cover off.

Given how tight I found my cover bolts to be, I would not try it with a ball; too much chance of stripping it and then you are so screwed.

I use a 1/4 drive 13mm short socket on a long extension to get to top inside pump mount nut and a bent wrench to get to the bottom. Like what was mentioned, the pump's top allen screws might be really tight. Make sure to use a good quality tight fitting allen wrench.

I used the longest ball end allen I could find, made it really easy. My idle screw keep working lose so I always put a drop of lock tight after messing with it.
