Can I rotate my HX35?

Postby wilkyflex » Mon Sep 30, 2013 2:48 pm

My H1C bearing was blown on my 1992 D250 intercooled truck. I replaced it with a used HX35w. I bolted it up directly to the non wastegated 12cm exhaust housing. But to make it fit right, I had to rotate the intake housing relative to the center assembly. Is it okay to do this? Will rotating the housing affect the turbos performance in anyway?

The HX35 did have a cotter pin on the outside diameter of the center assembly. And this cotter pin prevents any rotation. So I drilled a new hole on the outside diameter to moved the cotter pin to the new hole. Then put the center assembly back in the intake housing, and now it fits. I just want to confirm from somebody who knows turbos, that this won't affect the performance of the turbo.

Thanks

You need to have the turbo drain pointing down. The oil inlet and drain shouldn't be more than 15 degrees from vertical.

Edit: ^ He beat me to it

If your center section is oriented perpendicular to the ground, you're good. The reason there is the oil feed and drain.

My compressor housing lets air out at the 11 o'clock position in order to line up with my intercooler piping. 20k miles later and it's still ok.

It doesn't matter what position the compressor housing Is in. You don't need that roll pin in there either. There is enough friction between the 2 pieces that it won't move.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.
