new turbo options questions

Postby artieb » Sun Oct 13, 2013 6:37 am

Hi VE brothers, I have been holding off upgrading my 1992 H1C. I have been studying VGT and VNT's and waiting for some kind of controller. Something plug and play, yet tuneable. As every VE IP has many different variables, like different injectors, inner coolers, springs and pins, the list goes on and on.
I know a well engineered twins seems to work well, and the same set of variables arise.
Has anyone researched the variable turbo concept, besides cable operated?

Fleece Performance makes a stand alone controller for the HE351VE (vgt), but its spendy...$600 or so last time I checked. Its fully tuneable, even can set it up so you can have an exhaust brake...

I didn't know Fleece got there standalone controller to work on 12V's.

I called them when Sutter had his he351ve for sale. They never actually got one ready to sell for 12 valves and had no intentions of doing so. Not the friendliest about it either. :?

I have been to Fleese's website. I would think by definition, stand alone means stand alone. Options were 98.5 - 02 or 02 - 05? I don't know what engine transmission information is needed for the controller?

I think they are using the map sensor on the 24v trucks but IDK. They were very clear with me they had no desire to sell them for 12 valves in the forseable future.

A guy on cumminsforum is talking about selling a contoller setup for $550 IIRC.

I have seen VGT set ups using drive pressure from the turbo to activate the vanes, the more pressure, the farther they open. And it had an actuator to jam it down into exhaust brake mode. The actuator just slid the whole mount on the turbo down so it closed the vanes. Good looking set up.

I'd think a "stand alone" controller would need to see TPS, MAP, and EB. Feed the controller that and away you go, I'd think.

Diesel Power did a write up about putting an HE351VE on a VP truck using the Fleece set up if someone wanted to dig the article up and see what all the controller needs to see.

One could easily build one out of an Audrino board. Boost, egt, rpm, tips for inputs (0-5v) and the outputs for the stepper motor that controls the vanes.

I would think if it were real easy there would be one commercially available by now, but who knows.

550.00 and uses 1 hot wire. No external sensors. Will be using the turbo rpm sensor in the future. I'll be watching this. Would this type of braking require upgraded exhaust springs?

Most people run 60lb springs with exhaust brakes.

There is a CL ad in Fort Wayne, that has a 2012 6.7 CTD, Fleese controller, HE35V, and manifold. He is asking 1100.00 complete. I wonder why he is selling? The ad didn't say. Just wondering

I've seen that standalone controller in that link work (well there's a video link on the page after with him running it) he's pretty sure it'll let you run he351ve on pretty much anything, but do remember anything beyond about 36psi is out of its compressor map so it'll just make heat beyond that
