Playing around, new setup.

Well guys, here's my old truck. It's been through a lot in it's life, and I've decided it's time to take it easy on it work wise.
But,,, I still want it to go fast, and be fun to drive around. I had a few old turbos lying around from past experiences, and I thought " what the hell, let's make one of these work as a big single!"
The turbo I had was a s366/68,1.10ar. I knew it would be a pig so with some serious talking with the other Eric, at the Hungry Diesel, we decided I should order a .80 gated t3 housing. This way I could reuse the housing with another set of twins, in the future.
Image
Another purchase I made was a dps manifold. It was a fair price, and of a good finish. I figured with well over 400k on the truck it was well do for a replacement.
After some minor hiccups finishing the install, I took the truck for a little spin. I was surprised!!

Now,,, I'm not saying my way is the only way and I know this is not a good towing setup. This is simply a post for anyone looking to build a fun truck like I did.
First off it spools a lot like my old twin setup, just with a softer midrange hit. The top end pull is amazing. The egts once the turbo is lit are cool. If you stay on top of the charger between shifts, the eggs are surprisingly cool for the injectors ok running (6x16s).
I've not really fine tuned the wastegate, but curently it opens about 35-37ish psi. This is where I had my super40/35 hybrid running at, and this is when you can really see the difference volume makes, vs psi.
I feel I could also tow a small amount with this charger as well, but 3.07s aren't a great towing gear, so I'd have to watch my pyro quite often.
I hope this thread can answer some questions, and I hope some questions are brought up about the setup.

Eric.

It would probably do really well with a built auto.

Forget that turbo crap. Nice rims!

IMO, those are THE ones to have for any square body truck.

Very nice looking truck. 8)

I've always been a fan of two tones. Makes it that much more fun when they're fast. People don't expect it.

Thanks for all the kind words guys. My boss bought a 92' club cab for hunting, and it came with those tires and rims. They were oxidized, but some elbow grease got them to shine again. Simple 8 hole is clean look that will never get old. As for the paint I had it repainted in Jan of 08'. It was done by friend learning, and after 3 years of working out of it, it's starting to have kniks here and there. David,,, I've followed your trucks build for years, and the amount of attention to detail you've put into some of the smallest things totally destracts from the paint.

Back to the turbo thoughts. If I get into the skinny pedal later in the rpm the charger cools me down to about 13-1400 degrees. If I decide to lug into a gear it will get hotter. I vise gripped my waste gate line and I can get 47 psi put of turbo, and that seems to cool better. I'll try fiddling with the actual wastegate to see if there is a sweet spot.
So far the truck is a blast to drive once lit.

If you can fine tune that gate to be fully open and still maintain about 45 psi...it might just be the ticket.

As of now just a 366gsk. There are plans in the future to swap a 14mm head and rotor on the pump. And that's why I haven't gone with a 4k spring setup

Well guys, I messed around and clicked off a 13.64@95. Truck was hard to spool, but once it spooled hang on. There's nothing quite like a boosted launch.

Ain't that the truth.

Hahaha. Ain't that the truth. I actually said a prayer over the bedside of my truck, asking " please God, let my truck make it through the day, I promise not to be hard on it till I get all billet shafts."

What do you know, I made 6 passes, and drove 66 miles home.

Thanks for the kind words.

I may have found some more quickness in the form of earlier shifts.
I knew I'd be spoiling for quite some time so I "zip-tied" my tv lever all the way back.
Well this made my 2-3 & 3-4 shift at or after 3100rpm (past defuel).
Maybe some fine tuning of the shift points will keep the pull more solid.
