Diesel Power Magazine 1st Gen build! (Part 2)

Postby JQmile » Tue Nov 19, 2013 1:21 pm

Hey all!

For those who don't know me, I'm the guy with the 14mm Scheid VE truck that's been in Diesel Power a bunch of times, and eventually made 972rwhp on a dental clinic's worth of nitrous.
(Thread) viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1623

Now, I realize that most people won't go as far as I did, and I still love the old trucks, so I'm going to be helping with my friend's daughter's intercooled Dodge.
She's only 16, so he doesn't want to give her too much power, so right now we're just doing intake, exhaust, injectors, bumping timing, and re-adjusting the throttle linkage for more travel. The stock exhaust manifold also shrunk and broke a bolt, so that'll need to be replaced as well. Anyways, I'm excited about the truck, and open to advice on it, which is why I posted on here. I feel like this site doesn't have the usual Internet forum mindset (You suck, your truck sucks) so feel free to voice what you'd like to see done. Here's a pic of it as it sits.

Is it stick or auto? Looks like the truck is in pretty good shape.

A518, and yes, other than a little peel on the other side, it's clean.

What kind of 16-year-old girl are we talking about here? Is she actually into diesels and getting her hands dirty or are we trying to make a truck she won't have to get under the hood of when she's out in the middle of nowhere?

I would suggest something along the lines of a Justin Bieber paint wrap, but I think Hineman already has dibs on that idea. :(

First thing I would honestly do is bypass the fusible links with fuses, put the headlights and key-on circuits on fused relays, and grease the hell out if all the bulb sockets. Then check every inch of wiring harness for chafing or potiental chafing.

Anything electrical, I'll think of more later.

Building a bullet proof tow rig would be awesome to see out of this truck.

I'm open to suggestions on fuel pins, it seems like they are worth some HP. Who's making em now?

As for the governor, I want to see how much rpm we can get out of it with the throttle linkage mods first. A few people mess up the 3200 spring and bend the fulcrum lever
or drop stuff in the pump, and the VE's don't make much power past 3K anyways. I got nearly another 500rpm out of mine with some linkage tinkering and no high idle screw.

On my old 91 I had I could get 3000 rpms with just removing the high idle screw.

My vote goes for the BD Diesel fuel pin. Their fuel pin and gov spring kit is a lot of money, where as just the fuel pin is under a $100. It's not cut any deeper than our stuff can move anyways and it seems to have a lot shallower beginning and thus allowing us to have more low end control.

When I put it in it replaced a stock pin on the shallowest side..... and my immediate thoughts were "wow I gained a lot of low end control". And this is the first time that I have ever not had an afc leak with an aftermarket pin.

doing a tach install would be helpful to many I'm sure. including the part numbers for the isspro adapter thing for the 92-93 trucks would help some too. it would also be neat to do some extrude hone testing on the injectors before possibly switching to something else

R8912-92 is the Isspro part number for the wiring harness. Is that what you are referring to?

Hey, JQmile. I'm a big fan of "rust bucket" and glad to see you tinkering with another 1st gen. I think since the truck is for a 16 year old girl, I am interested in seeing some cosmetic upgrades. I plan on updating my interior with a seat from a new truck and building some sort of rear bench. What are the plans for the interior if any? I think it's something us 1st geners over look.
