1989 injectors how much hp/torque

Postby jmos4 » Thu Jan 02, 2014 11:07 am

Hi,

Got a 89 and want to know what hp/torque can I expect with these injectors and would aftermarket give much room for improvement?

I'm running a stock non intercooler VE pump at present.

Regards,

Stock non I/c injectors can make as much (close anyways) to 400hp, with all of the other supporting mods. However, going with aftermarket injectors (as long as you stay the correct spray angle - 155) will usually give you a cleaner/more efficient burn. Reason is, most aftermarket injectors available would be a 5 hole injector...such as the marine 370 and therefore break the fuel up a little better than the factory 4 holers.

If you're nit picky, get something else ASAP. They haze and smoke heavy black before boost comes in.

If you like dirt cheap power, run them. I've made 270 hp to the wheels with basic mods, an HX35, and a 2nd gen intercooler. I only made 500 lb-ft of torque due to my dying automatic.

Those numbers sound about right. I was at 255/555 with my fresh auto/Specrite combo back in the day.

It is crazy the amount of torque left on the table with a non lockup setup.
All my hp has been = to or above a buddy's manual truck. Only difference is.... His extra 150ftlbs torque.

Lol

Was that with your 518? In 3rd or 4th?

I think with a tight 518 and 3.07s, you could get a nice torque number.

Same converter, old 727.
I've never dyno'd in o/d. I figured it would give a skewed view of what it really puts down. And I'd like to keep the control group as unison as possible throughout all my progress.

Not to mention how fast I'd be turning things full tilt in o/d. Lol

True  Some people like to dyno them in O/D around here. I never put that much thought into it.

1:1 is usually the most accurate dyno numbers, unless there is not enough load on the dyno. Then, overdrive loads the engine harder and thus producing a more accurate number.

I don't know any thing about "manipulating" dynos, as I live in the Midwest, but I recall someone with a white CR Dodge affiliated with Brown's Diesel added a GV or something similar to get a higher number. At the one and only dyno day that I went to, the Fleeces ran trucks in O/D. I don't know, but they have been around the block.

It seems a lot of dynos from around the country are not loaded dynos, and have a weighted drum of 3k or 6k or whatever. Those don't load the heavy trucks like common rail trucks nearly to what they are on the street and therefore running in higher gears helps.

Think of a low loaded dyno as running your truck in 4 low or 1st gear... . pretty hard to build boost, as it basically just "skates" through it.

Out "west", it is more common for newer dynos to be at events where massive loads can be placed on the engine, thus producing higher numbers. They can be more realistic, as it is the maximum that that engine can actually produce.

Back in the new England area, it seems that most dynos are only a 3k load...........I've heard of 1k plus hp trucks laying down in the 500 range. Yet lower trucks (which don't need the load) will product in that 300 range still.

With a load type dyno you need a good operator too. Where we usually go I think the guy guesstimates what he thinks for load. I ran after a duramax truck at 25% and my truck started to die. He cut it back to 10% and I don't think it was enough. Did 388hp. On the drum type the next summer with no adjustments I put down 350, which I think is closer to what it is.

Does anybody know how much their trucks are loaded on load type dynos? We're going to a new place in the spring and I'd like to have an idea how hard to load it. I want to put down a decent number to shut up the Maxipad pukes. ;)

Depends on the dyno. On the superflow I was on, IIRC 30% was they did... and it was around the equivalent to a 12k roller from my guessings. The last Mustang I was on.... at 30%.... I almost couldn't accelerate, it was literally a stand still.

Unfortunately they don't tell us the equivalent in pounds, but then again, each dyno loads different.

You have a manual, right? As long as it is loaded enough for full boost.........then it is - higher load = less hp/higher tq and vice versa.
