New parts (again) - 62FMW review update

Postby RCCUMMINS89 » Sat Jan 18, 2014 12:48 pm

Ok.... So, as most of you know I still run the stock cam (for now).

I run the 62FMW/68/.8 turbo and it spools surprisingly fast and I love it. Here is the issue.... though one can have the fueling to spool a charger super super fast, what happens when one is not "fueling" it?

With the above (keep in mind manual trans and 37" tires) let's say I was pulling a 6% grade at 55-65mph.... truck wanted to haze as it would build about 5-7 psi at a steady speed. It wanted me to downshift and run in the higher rpm (I didn't). In short I needed more air at the lower rpm (cam or different housing). I will be adding a cam at some point, but I needed to find out what a .7 (12cm) divided housing would do.

So today, I installed a .7 T3 divided and gated housing. WOW, way more difference than I expected. That 6% grade at 55-65.....now 10+psi. The truck can build boost at 1000 rpms in 5th  .

WOT pull may be down some, but the truck is much noticeably faster getting up to speed and therefore the truck actually is quicker all the way around. Boost is still gated to 50psi.

This is how the 62FMW review update goes - On an Automatic truck, I would recommend the .8. On a manual truck I would recommend a .7

$1,550.00 - which includes 2.5" v-band style compressor outlet, HX40 (4") d/p flange, and the Borg Warner upgraded 6 pad thrust bearing assembly.

Crazy how much difference that little change will make. I'm thinking once I get a tighter convertor in my pickup my turbo lag will increase enough that I'll have to do something about it. What is the price on both of those housings?

Don't have set pricing on the .7 yet. The .8 is a little over $600.00.

It is crazy how expensive these T3 gated housings are.

$600?!!  I guess I will be sticking with a T4 housing. I've been looking for an .83 T4 , but was kinda hoping to go back to a T3.

Unless you want to go a non gated T3..... then you're around the $300 mark...

I was curious. I am probably going back to a single in a few months. I will probably get that 60mm compressor housing for my S357 though.

Some more update....

I can't emphasize how kick butt this charger is with this housing. This thing spools retardedly fast. Smoke is almost to zero on normal driving around, and I no longer have to be easy on it..... I can just simply drive it.

Also... peak egts are actually down. This is a perfect example of getting the air in sooner helps out the burn later. Meaning due to it being cleaner at the low rpm...it remains cooler in the higher rpm.

At 48-50 psi, it takes all the way through 3rd and into 4th before I crack 1200 degrees. Peak stays at 1200. Before it would continue to rise up til about 1300-1400 with current set up.

Wow that thing runs cool. Mine will hit 1400 on a sustained pull. that's with the 62/74/.8 and a lot less fuel (stock intercooler though)

I've done quite a few things to help clear up smoke and egts always follow.

2nd gen cooler w/3" tubes dropped egts about 200 degrees from the stocker and 3" tubes.
Exhaust manifold dropped egts about 200 degrees
And now the .7 housing dropped them another 150ish degrees

With these injectors, I would wrap my pyro around in about 2 seconds (like 2000 degrees) with my he351cw. I swapped this turbo on and it would still wrap over 1600 in about 3 seconds and wouldn't slow down. Then I started doing the above.

At wot I'm still not clearing up the smoke... I can't see out my passenger window at full boost. However, egts seem to be cool.

Well that's good. Mine clears right up then slowly climbs to 1400. I'm not even sure the steed speed helped at all, but I am still running all the factory intake, charge pipes, ic, and horn so that's probably part of my problems. I'll see what brownie does with a gtx3582r/s467 compound setup, full custom intake piping, and a water to air intercooler. I'll be going to some injectors about as big as yours only 155* since I'm going with marine bowls. I'll also have a cam and some hard work done

The only thing I noticed when going to the stainless manifold from stock was..... less smoke and lower egts. I couldn't really notice performance (speed, spoolability, etc...) gains.
