Injector time- who makes good ones?

Postby dpuckett » Wed Jan 22, 2014 1:35 am

My 93 turned over the big 400 last fall, and I think its time for some new sticks and a lower mile pump (the pump is in he basement, waiting a seal kit). The fact I have gone from 19 to 15 mpg in the last couple years, after checking the obvious, leads me to the fuel system. I was leanin toward a set of New Era 5x12s, but see they shut down a while back. Is there anyone that caters to the 1stgen/12v crowd that my online absence has made me miss? Ideas, suggestions, and experiences would be appreciated.

I am looking to end up with a useable 300 or so hp, while still keeping hwy MPGs in the high teens to low 20s I got with this truck when I bought it with only 275k. I have a 351vgt in the shed I am going to run with a mechanical operation. Use a wastegate actuator with a lever to control the vanes.

the hungry diesel , cpp, dap. i would suggest ddp, but they are expensive as sthi, and ive been reading about problems people have been having with the pop pressure being all over the place between injectors.

I'm probably going with Ducky injectors.

Daniel, I still got those 6x11's, but they have been really worked over. They were kinda not right by whomever built them, but once I had them flow honed and popped, they were way better. On top of that, the ultra thick washers may have been part of the haze issue to begin with, I got a new set of .020 washers that come with them.

Nearly all companies now a days offer an injector that will run good and perform better than the factory ones.

The things to keep in mind is.... how long do you want your new injectors to last?

Your factory ones lasted 400k miles ( a lot longer than most though ), that says a lot about Bosch injectors/nozzles. The new "fad" now a days is selling cheap Chinese knock off injectors. They are literally about a 5th of the cost for companies to buy as opposed to Bosch injectors.

So keep in mind when looking at injectors, that if it "affordable" it is pretty much guaranteed to be a Chinese knockoff injector. If you plan on using your truck and keeping the same set of injectors in there for a long time, these may not be the best choice for you.

The lug nuts off our trucks will also screw directly onto the injector body. In a pinch, I've used a lug nut and a closed end 3/4" wrench.

Put the closed end over the injector body and then screw the lug nut onto the injector body. Lay the open end across a manifold boss and hit the open end tip with a hammer, using the manifold boss as a leverage point. Works decent. But not nearly as good as using an actual puller.

Also.....tork technology sells the puller for around $20, well worth the money.

3/4" all thread, jamb nutter at both ends with some heavy wall DOM as a slide. I leave enough room on one end for a 3/4" nut tacked well to the desired metric nut, that I use to attach to the injector. Short, cheap, and effective!!

I'll snap picks tomorrow.

RCCUMMINS- I was thinking the exact thing in terms of quality vs price. I live in an area where a majority of the population will buy from the lowest bidder, regardless of quality. Makes it hard to run a business doing top notch work and pricing my work accordingly. I had figured to spend $5-700, depending on what's been done.

Ike- in my pickup, the thick stock washers smoked the least.

Thanks for the ideas.

For genuine bosch..... 5x11 SAC is the largest 145 cone angle injector one can get without paying for edm work. So, a 5x11 SAC bosch injector runs in the low $400 range.....after that, $550-600 is the going rate.
