HX-35 vs H1C upgrade

Postby matthewh » Wed Jan 22, 2014 11:38 pm

So I've been slowly gathering the pieces to swap turbos in my 93 W350. Was messing with the HX-35 the other night and noticed it had some play at the compresser wheel nut, mainly side to side, didn't notice any in and out. Unknown hrs in it, as it came off a genset.
So I figure I should rebuild it, but if I'm gonna go that route, would the upgrade to the stock H1C be more beneficial? Other than some slight pump tuning to try and find some better mpg, no plans to tweak the pump. Just a bhaf and 4in exhaust.

if I rebuild, who has a good kit?

Thanks

Side to side play is ok as long as it isn't hitting. In and out should be less than .010. I have seen some I swear were bad they were so sloppy sideways, and they are still running. The oil keeps it straight when it's running.

Oh ok, I'll stick the dial indicator in it and see what I get. I know it wasn't rubbing or hitting, just noticed movement while spinning the wheel

Depending on what size exhaust housings you have, they are interchangeable too. So you can put the 12cm from the HX on the H1C for a little quicker spool up, but I think I read on here that the compressor wheel is a few mm bigger on the HX anyways.

Thought i had seen something on that here, maybe it was on dtr, either way, unless its a direct bolt on thing,i haven't messed with turbos enough want to try. I know the HX-35 is a direct bolt on, so as long as its ok, side to side play I'll bolt it on and go.

HX35 is a better charger, it is slightly bigger and has a map width enhancement slot. (it can build higher boost and be happy).

Side to side play is surprising on what's ok........I've held brand new chargers that I would swear were bad, I'm talking wheel was JUST shy of touching the housing. Never had an issue with them.

On the flip side...I've had new chargers that had literally zero side to side play. My current one is that way, it is just a tight built charger.

Been offline a while and mostly green but -
I had a '92 pig with the 21 housing and could barely make 3 PSI. A Yugo could beat me !

Put on a 14cm HX35 hot side and installed a 366 and holy hot potato !! Now it builds 23 PSI going up an on-ramp and cruises with 5 PSI at 65 MPH running mostly empty. (Even with a clogged fuel screen in the tank. Just spent forever tracking down that grief, but that's for another posting)

Of course this wasn't a simple plug and play. Decided to rebuilt the turbo while it was off and good thing too. Took it apart with over 220K on it and it was just starting to rub the dirt on the inside of the compressor side. Can you say shiny blade edges ? Lucky me !

On the cold side I made a nice taper on the intake and polished the inside of the out put neck. You know - the simple stuff.

On the hot side I opened it up and matched it to the manifold and polished it nice and smooth. 1 port was an 1/8" smaller on 3 sides then the other. When I was done even the bigger side was opened up close to a 1/4". Which left a bit more then 1/8" wall thickness. Both sides were tapered all the way in to just short of the start of the slot. Cleaned up the slot inside the snail to have an even distance from the wheel flange for a more even flow.

Doesn't even seem like the same truck now.

Forgot to mention - Now that it's making boost I discover that my ears don't like the song of a turbo. Anyone got a silencer ring they don't want ?

Do you remember where you bought your rebuild kit? Been to busy moving snow to take a second look at mine, but a source would be handy

Sorry - it was off ebay awhile back. Can't remember who. About $35 for a complete kit that fit both h1's and HX's with screws and all. You wind up with a few extra parts. Just buy from someone that has a high satisfaction rating as they don't won't negative feed back. I know most guys will say I'm nuts but I'm not building to race.
Be sure to clean the retainer groves real good. I used used a small dull snap-on curved pick, the black crap was as hard as rock. The shaft had some build-up that came off with a bit of used 500 grit very lighty and carb cleaner. Went over everything 3 times before it was good to go.

One thing to keep in mind is that the drain tube has to be changed as the waste gate gets in the way.
