I got no governoring action now.

Postby rockmike » Wed Feb 26, 2014 5:28 pm

I posted this question on another board, but I wanted to ask you guys over here also.I talked to Eric(hungry diesel) briefly about it he seemed to think its not to big of deal.Believe me I trust Erics opinions and advice, the dude knows a ton more about these engines than I do! hes most of the reason I know what I do.

The story:

Hey guys thought I would ask question im concerned about how my new IP is acting.

Some specs first:93 d350 370k miles,getrag,2wd, bosch 190's, BHAF,smooth intake hose,4" exhaust,hx35,South bend 13"HD clutch,water/ meth inj.M&H timing spacer,pump is set at factory mark on timing cover.

My latest mod is a BD diesel HP injection pump with 3200 spring and BD fuel pin.The pump came tuned pretty mild IMHO so Im crankin her up!

First of all I ran it like it came, hit about 25 psi and defueled @ 3200ish.So I backed out the high idle screw(1 1/2 threads showing) and cranked in the fuel screw.Went for a test drive and I get about 30psi now...excellent!Came back and pulled the air cleaner hose and bottomed out the fuel screw and tested for runaway. It sounded like it was revving pretty high but rpms coming up nice and smooth, not acting like it wants runaway on me at all.I jump in the cab and hit the throttle and OH MY its revving way past the 3200ish its going all the way up to 4500 or even further if I keep pushing the throttle. It does not hang at all, rpms come up real smooth and rpms come down quick as I lift the throttle.

What happened to my governor??? this concerns me! should I be worried?

Whatcha guys think about this issue and what do you suggest I try?

I havnt put the high idle screw back to were it was yet.Truck runs awesome! a 4th gear hell ride netted me 30 psi about 1050 egt's and still holding about 8 psi post filter.

Thanks, Mike.

How high does it go when you are driving it, like in 2nd or 3rd gear? You can't tell how high it revs sitting in the yard with no load, because the governor won't work properly. I can hit 3500 driving it, and I won't try it no load, because I know it will go way higher.

I was in 4th gear and kept it floored and it hit about 3500-3600 rpms I lifted cause I was runnin up on the car ahead of me it did not feel like it was even thinking about defueling at that rpm.

My original pump would defuel at about 3200 sitting in the garage, and this one did also when testing runaway after the first screw adjustment, but after I bottomed the fuel screw out and backed out the high idle screw is when this supposed lack of govenoring issue started.

Sure appreciate your reply.

If it doesn't actually run away when you step on it, I wouldn't worry about it. I know on mine when it hits 3500, the engine dies out like I turned off the key, so I guess that's where mines governed at. On the dyno chart I can see it defuels at about 2800, the chart goes up fast until then and drops slowly after that. I bet you were close to it dropping off.

Mine noticeably starts losing power at around 2800 rpms.... I can force it well passed 3500 or so. Our governors don't work as a on/off switch once we start modifying the adjustments.

On the drive home I was able to really open her up,It pulled hard all the way past 3500 rpm I felt it defuel shortly after that I kept in it and finally let off at 3800 rpm.

The truck runs stronger than it ever has,not much smoke.Mybe that pump has a 3600 rpm spring in it?

Thanks Eric and ptooombs,I appreciate you guys trying to help a guy out.I just panicked I guess lol like folks say every pump behaves different when we start tweaking on them...the learning processes continues. :D

They may have put a 4k spring in it. I know Scheid's does.

BD says its got 3k spring in it.Regardless I trust you guys advice on this and im not going to worry about it.One more question before I drop this subject :) The extra rpm im able to get to now will help that big jump from 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th when im tuggin my 18k load(loaded toy hualer)I have stock valve springs what RPM would you say is my max before im floatin valves and over revving that valve train? im not going to do it right away, I got to spend some time and money on the rock buggy now.How important is it to bump up to the 60# valve springs or do you recommend something other than the 60#'s

You sell the stiffer valve springs Eric?

Thanks for you help 8)

About 3500.... however, the higher the boost the lower that number is. Meaning at 50 psi or so you'll blow your intake valves open regardless of rpm. Make sense?

And yes, I carry Cummins as well as Toxic Diesel valve springs.

Thanks Eric, well I still cant seem to build anymore than 30psi still??? I need to pop the top off the afc cover and see if that pin is riding all the way to the top of the BD fuel pin.I noticed the fuel pin doesn't have the plastic washer on it,they just put a fat o-ring on it instead but I don't know if its riding all the way up to the deepest spot yet.

Sounds like you got a good running pump! I haven't really ever felt mine defuel after I started messing with it and I have the 3200 spring. I still need valve springs too, livin on borrowed time.

I'd go easy above 3200 or so without springs. A set of 60# springs will be fine for you.

On my pump with a 3800 spring it doesn't defuel even at well over 4000 rpms. I just don't let it rev that hi that's all.
96 converted to ve pump because p-pumps are overrated, always testing/playing with parts to get it running better.
