Anyone know about an HTT 62/65/14?

Postby toyota231 » Thu Mar 06, 2014 1:36 pm

Ive got an HTT 62/65/14 that needs rebuilding. I got it very cheap so im trying to use it instead of throwing down $1200+ on a new turbo. Ive been researching but it seems like there's not a lot of info on the darn thing. I would like to try to rebuild it myself but it needs both wheels since they have made contact with the housings. HTT wants $760 for the whole new center cartridge but im trying not to spend that much.

Does anyone know anything about the turbo? Is it based on an S300 and does it use the same rebuild kit and wheels as an S300? Ive read its based off of a 57/65/14. I know i should break down and pay to have it done but like a lot of people im on a tight budget and it would be nice to show the truck some love.

I got one setting in my shed, except it is a 13SS. Came off my 91. Not sure what I'm going to do with it yet. Put it on my 92 or the 2nd gen I'm thinking of picking up. Anyway, I haven't seen parts listed for them. HTT may be the only source. If you can get specific measurements of the parts, maybe that aftermarket turbo place, Batmo? might have them. Source Automotive still sells these turbos for $1800 something.

$760 is not all that bad for a whole new center cartridge. HTT uses non extended tip wheels on their turbos as well.

Not necessarily any significance at all. However, if one needs new wheels and center section... the "other" wheels from other companies may or may not work. Even though a turbo is an "S300" base, or it has a "62" wheel... there little things that are different AT TIMES between them.

It is hard to know exactly what HTT has done to it also. There are numerous different center sections and wheel combos.... let alone what one can swap and modify to hermaphrodite a turbo combination. Most all of the diesel performance turbos out there are a hermaphrodited set up in one way or another.

I figured I wouldnt get lucky enough to get some "off the shelf" parts to fix it. I thought I was getting a deal buying it cheap but I dont really have it in my budget right now to spend the money to fix it. Guess I just have a huge paper weight to sit in the floor and collect dust.

Don't feel too bad. I have several, rather expensive turbos laying around. I have no use for the one s480, the other s480 is finally going to get put on (though it won't get run for a while) and my s362 is likely going to become a paperweight too.

If you can find out for certain that it was built off form the S300G.... then you just need to buy the parts for that charger.

Do you have the cartridge p/n still? Or did they grind it off?

Luckily it does have the tag with part #, but whether thats a factory tag or HTT tag is a major question. Its a green tag with HTB2 part #1462359 and a serial #. My research comes up with an HTT 66mm for that number but HTT says its a 62mm, 62/65/14. Im guessing maybe mine is an older one that the and the part numbers have changed, but the pictures shown of the new number look like the turbo I have. Under the description it says the new part number uses Borg warner wheels with extended tip technology. Everything I see points to it being an s300 based turbo but nothing for sure on the exact one I have. So i know with my luck if I bite the bullet and order parts before im sure ill end up with useless parts.

What you are finding out, is somewhat what I was getting at in my prior post. It is merely impossible to figure out what stuff to use. Every company kind of has their own special little products that they use to be different. HTT builds good turbos, don't get me wrong on that.

I know you are wanting to save some money... but really the best way to do it, is to just let them go through it.

I think at this point it will just become a paper weight and ill move on to twins. Always wanted to try building a good twin setup and the price won't be terrible compared to rebuilding this and putting it on.

If it is a 62mm turbo and not a 66mm it would be a great secondary for twins. $760 is a lot of money, but better than buying that turbo new for sure.

Htt has no special anything they piece together turbos like any other turbo company with Borg Warner parts
I've rebuilt my "htt" 64/65/14 into a 64/68/14 with a turbine off a cat charger and a rebuild kit and turbine housing machining from Chris at ED with zero interchangeability issues

Yes, turbine wheels are interchangeable.

But you do know that an S300G and an S300 have different center sections, right?

Yes, the vast majority of the stuff is interchangeable... but not all of them. So, without knowing what center section and wheels were used... there is the POTENTIAL to order the wrong parts.
