60# Valve springs

Postby 89dudney » Tue Apr 22, 2014 6:34 am

I have a 3200 governor spring in my truck and I have my high idle stop out quite a ways because I dont have my valve springs in yet. When my pump was resealed, the manual fuel shut off was indexed to the wrong spot and now when I try to turn my fuel screw up, the fuel shut off quits working. My question is this: Will 60# valve springs be adequate for a 3800 governor spring? My future plans are a raptor 150, s362, 5x16s, 118/220, nv5600, SB dual disk, and a dana 80 with a 3:55 swap. And whatever else it takes.

I'm mentally not following or seeing how the fuel shut off won't work with the pump turned up, assuming it was indexed wrong.??????

Either way, yes 60 # springs will be enough for a 3800 rpm spring.... unless you plan on running massive boost into it, and then the 165# springs would be recommended.

Eric, don't they make 110# springs also? I thought I read about a set of those recently.

That's ok, I can't remember where I saw them, just that I had. CRS really sucks. ;)

I was told "60#" are 60# over stock and stocks are about 60#. So 110s would be lighter then 60s. I got a set of Industrial Injection's 150#, they were close to the same price as 60s.

One must be very careful when buying valve springs. A lot of companies call the springs 165 lbs, 110 lbs, etc. However since they aren't all measured at the same height, your 165's could be the same as someone else's 110's or vice versa.
Also going too heavy on valve springs "can" cause premature wear to the cam.

It's been my experience that with high boost, and approaching 4000 rpm or better, the 60# springs can begin to float a little. At least with my mess. I'm now running Hamilton's stg1 HD springs, retainers and rods.

I feel that in a ve application it is more a boost level that we start needing to worry about things. I've been told that at 50 psi the intake valves begin to open.. I can believe that. Matching that with increasing rpms and things don't work right.

I've noticed that on my truck (stock valve springs yet) that with high boost, I have a hard kick and then a hard fall off... meaning, I think that even though I don't necessarily hear valve float that it is not closing correctly.

So to run a 3800 spring, I would be okay to use the 60# springs I have? If not I will sell them and buys some different ones.

i have II 150's in mine, and it has seen 70+ psi of boost many times, and ran away 3 times with no valve float issue. 2 of the run aways i thought for sure it was going to scatter.
