Big Plans!!

Postby Jonnylightening » Mon Aug 04, 2014 7:25 pm

Hey guys! So im new to the 1st gen game and need some help. For starters I have a '92 D250 IC Cummins. So far I have the Denny T II, 3800 Gov spring, and few pump mods. As of now Im runnin stock charger and sticks......that's not workin to well for me :) Need MORE!!! Currently I have an S480 sittin in my room I plan on makin a twin setup out of. For now tho Id like to find a good budget charger I can use to replace the stocker until I get enough knowledge and dough to run the twins. I have been thinkin a good deal bout the good ol HE351? What do you guys recommend? Also how about injectors? I was thinkin bout getting 5x14 or 5x16, Im not planning on any towing just a playtoy for the streets. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Your going to want to think small… with your compounds that is. The VE pumps have a very narrow fueling window, and you don't want your air to miss the ride. I would look into a smaller s400 (s472 hell even a s475) over the s480 you have. I'm not saying it won't work, but it would not be optimal. Turbine wheel size, and AR all play a big part in in the primary selection as well. Talk with a reputable builder and really pick their brain. I've moved onto a p pump now, and I'm not going to run a s480 as my primary just to give you a comparison.
Your secondary I would use the same logic. Hx35, hx40, s300g, maybe a s360 (depending on Trans). I have zero first hand expirience with the He351 (so I won't judge it) but I'm sure someone will chime in and give you some great advise.
With your injectors go with a quality builder, "buy once, cry once". This is another great time to question the hell out of the potential builder. It's your hard earned money and you should feel comfortable when your done spending it.

RCCummins89 can throw together a awesome package for you. He's one of the few people that still emmerce themselves into the VE game hard! And one of the only (probably the only) venders that is primarily VE oriented.

Think really hard about what you want to do with his truck, and try to get the parts picked out the first time. Regaurdless your going to have one fun truck to drive.

You typed faster than me, but I'll leave my post.

S480 is too big in my opinion as a primary for a VE truck. I run a box stock s475, with a 12mm pump and 6x.016s; most say its too big, but I can get 38psi or so out of it and 70psi overall even with my craptastic amsoil air filter. (With an S300G secondary) HE351 or s300g or 62/65/14 or 62/68/14 or 62/71/71 over some sort of s472 or s475 would be easy enough. I'd go fairly big on injectors if it were me. A quality set will be fairly clean if tuned right.

Your one of the main examples of why I don't rule out a box stock s475 charger with a ve. I have a s472/96-1.32 I may run.

thanks a lot guys! Like I said Im still learnin. So forgetting bout the 480...for now!! So what would be a good choice of turbo and injectors? Bein Im not gunna run my baby in the snow thatll give me a chance to save for some other parts to help aid me like a tranny and TC. Also I have a 12v head off a 97 that I had Fire ringed and ported on the exhaust side, also 60# valve springs and ARP headstuds as well. Plannin on throwin those on alil later less I have to sooner.

BC runs extrude honed 5x18 injectors, which are massive... he has the most powerful 12mm ve right now. I run a 5x14 extrude honed injector, and push my 62fmw upwards of 55psi.

IMO.....extrude honed 5x16 (if it is just a toy) and a 60/68/.80 over an s472 with a 1.10 t6 housing.

Kinda what I was thinking… just wasn't sure on the verdict of 5x16s these days.

They won't run as good... but if one is going for all out power and doesn't care about smoke.... they are the go to, IF they are honed. Otherwise the 5x16 in itself won't make much power.

The ve wants a honed injectors... because we need too large of an injector to move the fuel. What I mean by too large is that is too large for the ve's pressures (which requires massive amounts of timing) The honing process quickens the cloud power, and thus helps burn the fuel.

Well shoulda been alittle more specific on the "TOY" side. Im more less wanting to build a street/strip type truck or mainly something thatll keep close to a few of my buddies CRs and 6.7s if that's possible. Right now I drive it daily but Id really like to have a little street sweeper. Later in the future Id like to do a four link setup and try and eliminate some of my extra weight. I know its a challenge to build a 500HP VE truck but I rode in my buddy's old 24V and it made like 560HP on the dyno and for around here that's pretty decent plus his was an ext. cab and had 35's so if I was to get around 400HP I think that would be pretty awesome for around here in a VE 2WD.

5x12 (if honed) is all it takes to get to 400hp. Also, a single is all that it takes to get maximum power out of a ve.

Any bigger than 5x12 merely carries your power higher into the rpm.... twins will pull harder (seat of pants, not dyno proven) and cool a little better.

so what should I look for in a charger? Ive been lookin at BW S360s,S362s, 363s, 366s? a good deal of the S360s run like $620 to $700 which thatd be a good round numbered budget charger for me.

IMO the 62fmw is the best high hp single. I'd personally stay away from the T4 turbos, which are the "affordable" ones in that $700-$800 range.
