Tuning an he351/ht60

Postby josh_6bt » Mon Aug 18, 2014 8:13 pm

Ok I'm in the tuning process on my 92 and I was wondering how much should the wastegate open on my he351? When I apply air pressure to the gate the rod moves roughly 3/16. Now when the rod is not on the turbine gate lever the rod moves about a 1/2". I'm wondering how does it need to open to allow enough air flow to the ht60 to be effective.
I have my wastegate hole drilled to 1" and I tried a spring style wastegate but it didn't help me. I can only build 35-40psi with a built 12mm pump (200-220cc) with the smoke screw turned all the way up and star wheel is almost to top as well. Also have 7x10 sticks. The truck will build 40 psi no problem with just the 351 but gets hot very fast.

When do you have the gate opening on the 351 now? What are your egts like now?

Well I haven't driven it yet (waiting on my adjustable boost elbow). but with the spring gate it easier hit 1300, I basically have to drive by watching the egt gauge. On a normal easy drive it runs around 800-900 but if I have to pass someone the gauge moves quick. I'll be setting my 351 to about 25psi and start there I guess.

Update: installed a 0-30 gauge on my ht60 and installed adjustable elbow on the 351. Set it to 28psi and was able to build 20psi from the ht60 and 40-42psi at the head. Later turned the elbow as tight as I can and got 45psi overall and still 20psi from the 60. It's too dark to tune now so later I might installed a plug where the elbow was and see how effective my homemade elbow is. Would drive pressure be causing me problems and prematurely opening my gate??

I'd unhook your wastegate line and just let drive pressure open it, see how it does.

I would think a '351 could almost handle a set of 7x10's by itself. I wonder if you don't have some boost leaks somewhere...

Gonna get my can of ether and check for leaks tomorrow. Would drive pressure open a stock wastegate?

Please explain to me how your going to use a can of ether to check for leaks. Boost leaks???

There is absolutely no sarcasm in my questioning, curious…

Well, on a gasser you can spray it and the vacuum at idle will pull it through the holes causing the idle to pick up.

Not quite as effective on a diesel, especially with a small turbo like a 351. They'll almost already have a small amount of positive pressure in the intake, even at idle. The semis and stuff with giant exhaust housings tend to work a lot better for this method.

If it can pull the ether, it'll work the same was as the gassers.

I feel it is most likely a fueling issue. Probably boost leaks as well.

7x10 injectors and a 220 cc pump is not enough to overwhelm even an he351cw by itself. You are possibly simply not driving the chargers hard enough.

Well before when I had just the 351. Hauling a 1500lb truck box camper my egts at 60mph were 1100. Thing run hot and smoked pretty good. Star wheel and smoke screw were both set to the top because before it smoked worse and was laggy. Maybe 5x16s are in order??

You'd be surprised, even a couple of pinholes can move a whole lot of air at 40psi.

I would throw together an actual tester with shop air and a regulator, that you can spray soapy water on.
