Just a little more . . . . .

How to make it go fast

An update:
I've been running up the miles on the new engine. Blew out the front freeze-plug along the way.

I ain't into the billet-mess with the less than quality O-rings so, I did me.
- Cleaned up and installed a new freeze-plug as per standard procedure.
- Took the old freeze-plug and drilled a 1/2" hole in the center of it as an aid for future removal.
- Heavily sanded the outer periphery of the old freeze-plug so that it would fit loose.
- Installed the old freeze-plug backward to the new so that its dome/dish was sitting just proud of the block.
- The engine fan's mount sits in front of said freeze-plug. It has a recess where it spans said plug.
- Installing the fan mount, its backside is just in contact with that reversed plug thus it holds the plug(s) in place.

With right at 1,100 miles on the new engine, I recently got around to putting the heap on a dyno.
- There's no real change in fueling over the former build.
- With the converter locked and in overdrive, I had a fit getting on top of the turbos below 2000 engine RPM.
- After a few minor adjustments, it became evident the current injection timing is optimal.
- After a number of pulls, the damned TPS started showing its ass which resulted in the trans dropping out of OD & lockup during the pulls (I had the mechanical side of it set wrong).

Screw it! It is what it is.

Standard 12mm VE IP on straight #2:
No change in horsepower but, there's an additional 140ft/lbs of torque with the EGTs never going over 1300*f.

I'm currently tuning it and me with salt-air at 8' elevation. It's on #2, I'm on ethanol.

@KTA: Nice!!

@1STGENFARMBOY: Nah. Just light local driving lately. To be honest, I just want to enjoy the ride for a while and not have to mess with fixing anything. The pandemic crap has put a huge hole in truck funds so, . . . . that's the end of that for a while.

Not long after my last post, I retired. :D
With that, the "Pay-To-Play" method of operation came under hard scrutiny. And I'm not necessarily talking about the funding side of the equation but, the "If it ain't hurt at the end of the strip, you're not getting all of it to the table" mentality is, at this point, very expensive.

Frankly, in addition to increasing physical limits, I've reached the point of being plain tired of often working/tinkering on the heap. Don't get me wrong, it's still fun doing stuff to it but, working in the heat/cold, on a plywood floor in a glorified tent has made its mark in my enthusiasm (as one of many example).

I suppose it's fair to say that I'm burnt out with it.

These days I'm content with going to the coast (in a spirited manor ;) ) regularly. My loving Son has been profoundly helpful in keeping the truck running true.

To be clear, I am so glad I took the time to build stuff so as to have everything sound and reliable with low maintenance.

That being said, there's a regular conversation in my head involving refined injector nozzles and a competition-pump.

Haven't been to the track in a couple of years.

I just drive mine too. I have made no improvements or done any tuning in years. They run, if they don't I fix only whats broken and move on. My extra time is zero, my body says I can't work all day then play mechanic at night. The trucks look horrible, less paint every year, what ever, at least all 3 run and are road legal. My 92 red one gets used the most. It hauls all my smaller equipment to jobs. Even in the gross condition they are I still get many onlookers and stares.

I haven't even driven mine in about 2 years. Needs tires, the driver door doesn't open, battery is dead. Still got it though.

Holy cow, I can’t believe this thread is nine years old…… The sea I definitely get where you’re coming from, especially with the amount/level of work and man hours you’ve documented on that truck. And who knows how much else. I’ve wondered for a while what kind of power would be made with a straight swap of a maxed out THD Competition pump, i’m sure it would be well into the 600s at least.
How much timing ended up being optimal on the dyno run at the top of the page?

Fatty, I can’t remember did you ever dyno yours? I remember your 0 to 60 being under six seconds with no boosted launch and with the turbo not lighting until 20 something miles per hour, that’s quick.

Me too. I've pondered such more than once. May happen.
