Hoping to take our kids in the next summer or two. Oh that another hobby of mine....Kids, I have 3 kids now. My boy 7, Girl 5, and another girl that's 13 months, and another one on the way that's due in August, about a week after my first ones birthday lol.

And, . . . . . it won't work. The hoses coming off the top of the filter-head will be in the bottom primaries down-pipe.

SHAW!

I'll have to reconfigure the mount (remake from scratch).

So, I broke down and bought some clean 10ga CRS sheet-steel . . . and tried again . . ..

Image

Went'ta throwing the fire to it . . . .

Image

Form it with a maul and anvil . . .

Image

Do so repeatedly . . . .

Image

Whittle on it some to come up with another  . . . . rough-cut remote oil filter bracket . . . .

Image

a few minor rough adjustments, some grinding, drilling, sanding, and paint, . . . . it should fit just fine with the oil-filter sitting at an angle . . . . you'll see . . . .

OK, here, in it's final shape, it's been cleaned and is cooling from off-gassing in the oven. (Typing this has the paint's vehicle coming out prior to going in the oven. I want this thing installed tonight).

All the twisted metal will make sense once seeing it installed. ;)

This works. 8)
- The filter-head bracket uses the OEM transmission's heat-exchanger's mounting bracket's foot-print. On the left side of the passenger's engine mount, and there, at 11:00, on the transmission/engine adapter-plate.
- The filter-head is located four or so inches lower than before.
- The filter-head is angled toward the direction the hoses come from.

The result is the hoses being well away from the bottom primaries hot-stuff. There's room to include a sheet-metal heat-shield if need be.

Image

As such, the filter itself is relatively easily reached. There's five or so inches between it and the front differential. It'll drool on the 'diff on it's way out though. I can live with that.

Image

Now, I can get on with making-up the hoses to connect it all.

. . . . Keep moving forward. . . . Keep moving forward . . .

Thanks. There is some satisfaction with handcrafting stuff. I like to think that with all the thought/work put into the stuff before putting the heap on the road, will result in a relatively low maintainence / highly reliable engine . . . . all things considered.

Finding those components to make the two oil-filter hoses has been a pain in the ass.
- Both, the oil-cooler cover-plate, and the remote filter-head have in/out ports that are close together.
..... So close, one can't spin in the second of two standard 90*ELL -12AN fittings. You can spin in the first, but there's no room to spin in the second fitting.
..... The way the oil-cooler's cover-plate ports set, and the way I have to run the hoses, puts the two hoses in the same space just under the aluminum turbo brace.
- The oil-cooler cover-plate has 7/8 -14 O-ring threads. The remote filter head has 3/4" NPT.
- As such, the cover-plate is -10AN. The filter-head is -12AN.

Crap. . . . :?

- I don't care for the way I think the O-ring fittings of the cover-plate are gonna work. I'm gonna re-thread (enlarge) those ports to 3/4" NPT. That greatly expands my options for those fittings and makes all the plumbing -12AN.
- I eventually found what amounts to a Street-ELL fitting. The 3/4" NPT leg is a little over 3" long. That will allow it to present the -12AN fitting proud of the other, standard 90* ELL next to it. https://www.indsup.com/CCCTX-5703-Extra ... 1&CartID=0
- Using 30* angled hose-ends at the cover-plate will point the hoses back toward the block, and over the engine mount. Much closer to the block than shown in the above image. This will keep the hoses further away from the turbo hot-stuff.
- The hoses will curve down the the filter-head and connect straight into it. (It's mounted at a 45* angle to receive the hoses and better clear the bottom primary turbo).
- Fittings and SS braided hose selected so as to maintain at least a 200psig working pressure (fine-print).

You'll see. ;)

After bush-hogging another three or four acres, got to working on the truck.
- Got the oil filter hose stuff on the way.
- Focusing on the block, and that other surrounding the new turbo wad, I removed the 23 year old block freeze-plugs and block heater. While the meat of the things appears OK, that sealing area is looking iffy. The O-ring on the heater is done.

Image

- Got all the openings of the engine sealed to keep trash out.
- Scrapped off the old oil-cooler gasket material
- Got to reroute the liquid and suction line where they come off the compressor (getting away/out from under the turbo hot-stuff).
- Got to move a 4" x 6" oval of firewall about a half inch.
- Got to fabricate/install a heat-shield for the HVAC box.

Image

- Having all the materials needed, I need to get on with blasting/ceramic coating the hot-stuff. It can be curing while the above is going on. :|

On the oil hose routing you need a 90* fitting and 30* hose end at the cover and 90* at the filter head?

Believe me, I thought about that. Unfortunately, I don't have a very short radius 3/4" pipe bender. Further, while I tried my best with what I made, I don't feel the new oil filter mounting bracket is rigid enough to ensure (read: long term) no fatigue fracturing of the hard-pipe due to the heavy filter vibrating. Frankly, I'll be tickled if the mount doesn't crack in the sharp bends at the mounting feet.

Finally found an HVAC tool I've worked around too long. With some hose, and a hand full of fittings, I can put the HVAC refrigerant line-set anywhere I want. [And maybe be able to make permanent (less expensive) plumbing hose stuff elsewhere].

It's good for: -6, -8, -10, and -12 stuff. 8)

Got on with cleaning up the passenger's side of the block. Installed new freeze-pugs and block-heater. Moved the firewall back a little where the down-pipe was close.

Image

Cleaned up and painted the main down-pipe.
Adjusted the bed mounted temporary stack mount so that it's all 5" and aims at the new feed-pipe.

Image

Painted such.
