Just a little more . . . . .

How to make it go fast

- Got the Compushift specific inline VSS and installed it between the truck's ratio-adapter and VSS. My speedometer now works correctly. :roll:

My stock/OEM transmission fluid dip-stick tube has been "adjusted" numerous times to get around the trans of the moment. This round is no different.
Yeah well, I pinched the tube's O-ring where it plugs into the trans-case. One drop every ten seconds. :roll:

- Fixed that PITA mess!

Slowly moving forward, SLOWLY but, . . . still. :?

Indeed. 8)

Fired-up the DATA-logger to see what's going on. (Fresh software install. Still gotta configure it). There's apparently an issue with the Primary and Intake-log Boost sensor/wiring.

Anyhoo, this is some of the typical DATA to sort through and interpret.

WHITE = Speedometer
ORANGE = Engine RPM
LT BLUE = Transmission Line Pressure

WHITE = Speedometer
DK BLUE = Pyrometer (used here as a reference to throttle position)
LT BLUE = Transmission Line Pressure

Just for chits'n giggles . . .
ORANGE = Engine RPM
PURPLE = Secondary Output
LT BLUE = Back-Pressure

Just read through this whole thread.

If I’d been keeping up with this I’d have either finished my truck or given up on because I can’t compare :lol:

Awesome thread, BC. I’ve messed with some gassers lately, your datalogs are awesome and they’re invaluable, even sow a street car.

Your triple build is nuts, I’m glad I hacked my stuff together before you set a standard. :lol:

Congrats on your progress! :grin:

Thanks. :D

After 295,502 miles over the coarse of 27ish years, I believe a rod-bearing has parted ways. :!:

Went out to the dyno shop the other day and made an appointment for a week later. Started the truck and let it warm up. Just before leaving the house, I noticed the oil pressure was a little lower than normal. Checked the oil level and found it full. OK, fine. On the way home from the shop, I noticed what I thought sounded like I had an air-bound an injector. A few seconds later, a very strong thumping started coming from under the hood. The oil pressure gauge showed none. Still full of oil.

They've been good bearings. Funeral details TBD.

That sucks Dave! Sounds like a good excuse to upgrade the bottom some though. ;)

I've known for a while the cylinders were flaring toward the top of their bores. The excessive blow-by speaks loudly of it.

My initial thoughts regarding that are:
- Do the typical bore oversize.
- Replace the pistons with the Mahle 286210 (the NON IC piston I think it is). That'll he me go from a stock 54mm bowl opening to a 59.12mm bowl opening. Further, My stock ICed piston bowl has a 44.2cc volume. The 286210 has a little smaller bowl volume of 43.2cc. That'll raise the C/R a bit.

I'm interested in the bowl volume as it's one way of raising C/R. My head has swirl-inducing reliefs cut in and as such, the C/R is reduced.
I'd like to bring the C/R back up.

Open to suggestion. :)

OK, . . . .. .. hold on . . ..

>Takes a belt, . . make that two belts from the Mason jar<

Got the party started with pulling the front of the truck off.

Toward the end of the day, the wife stuck her head out the door and hollered "Dinner's on the stove".

I replied: FINE!!

Are you at your timing/boost limit, BC?

If you’re at your timing limit and aren’t spraying out of the bowl, will wider bowls hurt anything? If you’re not out of your maps, why not just shove some more boost into it?

If you’re gonna put aftermarket pistons in it anyway then you may as well, but if not then it’s a pretty big expense.

Well, 15 years ago, I bent-up some coat hanger wire . . .

Image

Stuck that bad boy over my KDP . . .

Image

That bad boy is right & tight today . . .

Image

That's the good stuff so far. And I've still got to see what's stomping around inside!! :shock:

So, I'm pulling stuff off the front of the engine. The engine lube-oil pump's right there so . . (just that much less weight to lift out).

So, as I'm pulling out the pump, half of the lower/right mounting bolt flange falls out. ?????
Pulling the pump on out finds it fully intact and apparently OK.

Looking in the block's oil pump recess, we see a hair-line crack start in the lower/left oil pump mounting boss. It leaves there and goes down to the root of the recess floor and wall along the bottom headed to the right . . .

Image

. . . To the right, toward the block's front crankshaft main-bearing web . . . .

Image

I see where I need to revise the primary-to-block support bracket so as not to have such a sharp fold (needs a large radius so as to flex a little as needed).

Image

It seems the landscape of the next play has changed.
That's about all I got to say right now.

It's safe to say you found the reason for the oil pressure loss. :(

On this post, BC shows up a step by step install of a common rail into his 1stgen.
