My impression of these trucks was that being all mechanical, they would be "tougher" than this. I was figuring they would chew up and spit out a bit of old fuel. Is there any option in a lift pump I can install that will be more durable?

No base, its an inline strainer, very similar to an universal gasoline filter. Uses 3/8" inlet and outlet. Worked well for me since I upgraded the fuel supply and return lines to biodiesel compatible rubber line, an inexpensive upgrade in my opinion.

The OE diaphragm lift pump...which is ok for an all stock truck. The reliability of piston pumps are good, but any added protection is always a benefit...which INCREASES durability.

Just like running a fuel pressure gauge after the fuel filter/water separator, you can monitor the condition of the supply system, and catch issues before it can leave you stranded. Small investment that can save a lot of money down the road ;)

You can't run trash through any tight-tolerance system, but in the mechanical's case it slowly dies, ruining ~$2k worth of stuff in contrast to CR systems dying instantly and wasting ~$5-10k worth.

An inline screen and factory filter oughta be enough to catch about anything that could harm a VE unless you get a really large shot of water.

FF 5079, Ike got the numbers transposed.
A gauge is a good idea, that's how I knew my piston pump was having a problem. I was driving to Indiana and the pressure kept dropping, the last hour or so I was getting nervous because I started at 16 psi and it barely dropped when I stepped on it to 8psi or so and it dropped to the bottom when I stepped on it. When I got to my destination I pulled the inlet fitting and the screen was plugged with crap. I cleaned it and looked at the piston in the LP and it had some bad scratches on it, I could catch a finger nail in them. I buffed it with some really fine emery paper and put it back together. Pressure was back up to 12 or 13 and didn't drop, but it won't make 16 anymore.
Since then I upgraded my supply line and added a sump, and am close to 15psi, and make 400 hp on that same piston LP. So they are pretty robust, you just need to do basic prevention to keep them working.

I ordered 2 of these filters from the local carquest. They will be here in the AM. I am thinking a fuel pressure gauge may be in order as well.

The FF5709 filters were in this morning and they were spin on filters. Not inline ones. So I got the parts for the pressure gauge and some Carquest 86270 inline fuel filters. They are 3/8" barb and good for gasoline or diesel. Hopefully this will cure my problems. Also, browsing through the interwebs I stumbled on to theses...

Too bad you didn't see my post above before you ordered them, I only get on once a day so I couldn't warn you sooner.

They didn't make me pay for them. But I did end up getting some other ones.

Apologies, I should have double checked before I posted...

It's all good. The one I ended up getting looks exactly like the real number you posted. Thanks again for the recommendation.

From what I have read they have the headlight buckets in different locations. Remember seeing pictures where the owner cut up the core support and relocated them to match the different grill

Been raining here. The plastic windshield wiper bushings are junk in my opinion. Any one make a metal replacement?

Find an early 91 core support, best of both worlds ;)

After receiving the threaded banjo bolt from Geno's, the fuel pressure gauge is installed. With a stock diaphragm pump it reads 6psi at idle. It drops to about 3 psi at WOT...but comes back up at cruising speed. I believe my fuel issues are taken care of now. Also this morning I had to change out the water pump as well as the radiator cap. Hopefully I can start saving for mods instead of fixing stuff now.
