1989 W350 want an intercooler

Postby 762frmafr » Sat Oct 25, 2014 11:01 am

So, I have been researching and I have come to the conclusion that a 7.3 intercooler seems to be the easiest route. So my question is, what other modifications need to be done to the engine for this swap? It is bone stock now. Also, any good links or suggestions for intercooler piping?

A 2nd gen IC setup would probably be a better choice. All of the piping from a 2nd gen will work.

You'll have to cut the leg off the intake horn, as in the picture you'll see what's left when it's removed. Depending on what turbo you are going to use, hooking it up to the piping would be the only minor issue. If you used say an HX35, or even a IC H1C, it's all there. If you are going to run the stocker, you'll have to find a elbow that goes from the small outlet to the rather large IC piping.

For now it will be the stock turbo. But that was going to be my next question. Which turbo would be a good upgrade from stock. It will mainly be a daily driver with some towing. Hopefully more towing in the future. And if I upgraded the turbo would I have to do injectors at the same time?

Also, which intercooler is bigger? A 2nd gen or a power stroke?

Depends on were you want to go on power. An HX35 with a compressor wheel upgrade would be good with stock to a small injector upgrade. Some people like the HE431, but I'm not too wild about the small exhaust side when it comes to towing.

With as large as the stock non i/c injectors are... you would be able to run literally any turbo from stock, up to a 62fmw without changing injectors.

So the question I have... how much power over stock are you wanting? Are you ok with the lag of the stock setup? Want faster spooling, or more power?

+1 on the pics, Ike!

Gonna make it easier to eyeball the IC I've had laying on my front porch forever.

Will an i/c grill fit a non i/c core support?

I don't like the lag of the stock turbo. But right now I am fighting lift pump issues. I drove it home from SC to Missouri. 700 miles on Wednesday. Friday on the way to my shop it died. I bled the system on the side of the road and it made it to my shop...barely. So I bled it again at my shop and went to the auto parts store to buy some more filters. Installed and bled the new filter while in the parts store parking lot. Then didn't make it 100 feet down the road and it died again... Went to parts store and bought a lift pump and installed it. It has been running great till tonight on my way home I didn't make it 200 yards from my shop and it died again. It was cold and dark so I left it in a parking lot till tomorrow. When I left SC I dumped 40 gallons of questionable fuel in the tank. But my question would be, if it was the fuel, why did it not happen on my 700 mile trip home? My other question is, will a piston lift pump handle "trash" better than a diaphragm pump?

Nope! Piston lift pump needs a filter or screen before it or trash will scarf the piston and you will lose pressure. BTDT.

Not sure, but my pile has the later grille and it wasn't intercooled....so I I'm not sure if the core support is a common NON-IC, or an oddity for just early 91's.

^^^ This is good advice. I run a in line strainer by FleetGuard, FF5709. They are inexpensive and work well, catches all the larger chunks of garbage that's in the fuel ;)

Do you have a source for the filter base for this filter? I am assuming you just plumb it in before the lift pump?
