Wanna switch to new turbo!

Postby theoldmanW350 » Thu Oct 30, 2014 12:47 am

Hello all. Well I've been sitting on a good chunk of money for some time and am considering dropping it on a turbo. I'm thinkin on a BW 60/68/.7 or the 62/68/12(or 14?) from hungry diesel. This is darn near a replicated inquiry to this one over on CF:
http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/89-93 ... st10965922

My truck at most is a DD as well. I just wanna be able to tow/haul moderately heavy without it being too much of an issue. My first concern is my BD exhaust brake:

(Hope I did that right). I was gonna contact HD direct but just thought I'd open it up to you all. Can I keep my EB with either of the turbos mentioned? I'm thinking the EB piston will end up hitting the firewall and/or the downpipe wont fit up with either turbo. I have some other Q's, but I'll see where this goes. Thanks

That brake won't fit any aftermarket turbo, due to it being set up for a 3" v-band.

But between the 60/68/.70 non gated and the 62fmw/.70 gated......absolutely no question, go the 62fmw. I'll more than likely be taking the 60/68 off the site, due to it falling short to the 62fmw in every way.

What kind of holset? Nothing has a 3" v-band other than wh1c or hx35

It's not a popular upgrade any more but if your exhaust brake is priority 1 then maybe a compressor upgrade is more your flavor. Maybe paired with a 12 or 14cm exhaust housing with the divider drilled.

The 60mm compressor and 14cm housing has served me well towing some heavy junk.

Hey, I didn't even think of that. It is a decent upgrade.

Well that or mod the brake to fit in a pipe. Someone on here has done that but idk who or if he ever finished it. The thing looked really good.

An hx35 would even be a decent upgrade over your baby h1c. And you could probably find one cheaper than a new compressor and turbine housing upgrade. It's pretty much a direct bolt on with a 3" turbine outlet as well.

HX is barely an upgrade.

It is six mm bigger compressor than a baby h1c. 6 mm smaller compressor than a 62 mm turbo.

While Jon is mostly right, don't under rate that little feller. The hx35 I started with when I started fooling around with my truck was an improvement and with the 12cm housing it was a worthy upgrade. I already had it from a parts truck so it's not like it cost me much to try it.
if it was close to free in price I'd snag on now just for the exhaust housing. It paired with a 60mm compressor would make a quick spooling air pusher. Mine has very close to no lag when driven right....not like an old lady. I can keep the boost up at 3 to 4lbs between shifts and that helps out with the dreaded getrag gear splits.

:edit:
I just remembered that while on eBay looking for an hx40 I ran across vband adapters. That may also be an option for you if you want to keep the brake.
