New engine for the RC...24 valve ve

Postby RCCUMMINS89 » Mon Nov 17, 2014 9:04 pm

The new engine is almost complete. Would of been a few months ago, but we have been in no hurry, and my builder has had a few "emergency" customers walk through the door (ya, like daily  ).

But, I have realized that we have never done any sort of a build thread, on anything. Well, here is the "build thread".

Now, I know that a 24 valve ve is in no way a new thing... but I did it for a few reasons.

Ellis will LOVE this... I did it, just so that I could run a 7 hole injector. I know right, me, the hater of 7 holers. I did it because the 24 valve 7 hole injectors are a micro-blind sac.

The engine itself.... High Output 24 valve pistons and engine kit..... Hamilton 188/220 cam.... STOCK 24 valve head, Hamilton valve springs, Decked the block as much as possible to gain compression. Did not do fly cuts or any other sort of fanciness to the pistons.

It will get the 7x11 honed 30% over, and a 62fmw/68/.70, it is o-ringed with A1 head studs.

Sounds like a lot of fun. Why are you keeping the head stock? Balanced bottom end?

Yes, balanced rotating assembly... including the clutch.

I kept the head stock.... because.... a 24 valve head flows just shy (I mean, just BARELY) of what a "normal" 12 valve ported/polished head flows. HOWEVER, when one ports and polishes a head... they'll actually take away from the low end torque. Much in the same way timing does. I felt that porting the 24 valve head was not necessary for this particular build. This entire build is to utilize a ve's low end grunt.

High(er) compression, to burn the fuel down low. Cam, to spool turbo faster. Head, to spool turbo faster. Injectors, to spool turbo faster.

Only time will tell... but I feel that it should be a very clean running "higher" hp ve. With a high tq to hp ratio.

And the crazy thing... this ve set up that I had.. it already spooled that 62fmw as fast as our '06 spools the stock set up with efi live. . The ve was just a smoke show doing it.

Decked block, 188 cam, and no flycuts?

Does the 24v have less rocker ratio or something? Those 188's are a crapshoot even on a stock-height setup.

Also, cleaning up the ports won't hurt torque any, especially around the valve stems. You're not going to lose velocity unless you really start opening them up or cut out the swirl ramps. :?

The 188 cam actually clears by a long ways (in a machinists world anyways) in a stock setup.

And we are a long ways from clearing right now... it'll happen, we'll just end up degree-ing the cam... and may have to recess the valves.

I'd say do a hefty polish job on the ports without increasing volume. It'll get rid of spoolup hindering turbulence, and make for some cool pictures to show everyone

I know what a machinist world is, I own a micrometer and everything. :P

Just wondering if you knew something I didn't. I actually had my valves recessed some on my head, I think you'll hurt airflow worse with that mod than you will with any sort of overporting. They had a pretty good discussion over on CompD about how the valve pocket shouldn't be worked.

Is this the engine that ate the pump on your other thread? Or was that the experimental pump on the old engine?

Did you find out what happened to your pump yet?

Old engine... which is the reason I don't yet know... I simply don't have time during the day to pull it off and look at it. It'll happen when the new engine is done and I pull this one out.
