1-st gen-like 24 valve ?

Postby jethro » Fri Dec 26, 2014 9:41 pm

Is it possible to build up a 24 valve engine but build it like a 1-st gen with all mechanical pump ?
Is there a spot on the front of the accessory drive case for a pump to run off ?
Would that be the main impediment ? driving the pump ?

Many people have put ve pumps on a 24 valve engine. My new engine (currently being built) is a 12 valve block, 24 valve pistons/head, hamilton valve train, and a ve.

The easy part is putting the timing case from a VE on the 24v engine. The hard part is adapting the lines to the delivery tubes, but I'm sure Haisley or those other guys in Indiana whose name I can't think of can make them easy. Bills buddies there, you know!

12mm to 14mm helicoil Pete. There are thead sert brand threaded inserts that do this as well but solid, that's what I'm going to use when I do mine. Piece of cake swap.
I'll look and see if I still have my link to the threaded inserts.

I lost my book mark I had, guess it was on my old phone. I did however remember the tread I read and retrieved the info from it.
The brand is time sert.
Read thru here http://www.timesert.com/html/catalog.pdf
Look under the oil pan drain plug repair inserts. When I'm ready to buy I'll call them and talk with them to find what I need.

If I ever decide to build up another engine - just for fun- that sounds like an interesting way to go.
I assume you could do an in-line pump too just as easy ?

Am I correct in thinking that in the later computer driven engines (24 valve) its the different way that the injectors are driven
that makes a computer needed ? So could you just use a computer 24 valve donor engine and change injector pump
and injectors and fuel delivery lines ? Don't I remember that the injector thread size is different ? Is THAT where the helicoils
come in ?????

That would be cool to get 24 valve power with no computer !

With a VP44 pumped 24v (98.5-02) the pump is what requires the computer. The injectors are still mechanical. The helicoils are for the injector lines at the injection pump.

You can mix and match mechanical injection pumps pretty freely as long as you have the pump, matching gear case, and pump gear. The pop pressures are changed in the injectors to match the pump since the injectors have to stay with the head.

Sheids! That's who it is!

I never heard of doing it that way Ellis. I thought you just got new lines made with the correct ends.

Nope, just heli coil at the pump.
