My new beater/puller build

Postby VanillaGorilla » Wed May 27, 2015 9:25 pm

I mentioned it so I thought I'd share it, critique all you'd like, I don't know everything and I'm smart enough to know it.
I sold my last 93 that's in my sig, it was a blast but I wanted... "more" so off to get a decent replacement that's a little cleaner underneath. Basically looking to do a pulling truck that I'll drive a bit.

VE pump maxed out and 4200 spring, Denny T 2, raptor 150 LP (may add a 14mm head but start with 12mm)
Valve springs, more timing (how much depends on what it wants)
ATS 3 piece T4 manifold and BW S366 turbo fueled by 7x23 injectors.
-12 line from draw straw to LP then -8 to IP
trans is a 518 for now, an nv4500 will take it's place as time and funds allow.
I desperately need head studs, that'll come soon.

That's a basic rundown, I'd be happy to answer questions or criticism. The goal is a good running VE and I think that's one we can all agree on!
93 Reg cab LE 4x4 518AT, 145k and counting, pump turned up,Internal pump mods, Denny T stage 2, non IC DV's, timing bumped up, BD 40hp injectors,BHAF and me-built mandrel bent CAI,4" turbo back, Holley lift pump, new white with gold paint job, recieving more mods to tow the Duster and push this stupid WI snow.

Thanks, once I get rolling on things (my duster is first priority right now) I'll be happy to post results.

I am kind of basing this off SmokinAce's truck since it's a strong proven truck. One area I'm not 100% sure of is the trans, I think a stick is best but I'm open to the thought of a 47rh and having a lock up. Thoughts?

An old member, StillSmokin said he picked up a bit of power gutting the AFC. Seeing as it's a pull truck, AFC may be unnecessary. He also had some DV's made from an M&W pump and according to Andrew (pulltilbroke), when he did that he started finishing in the top 5.

According to benching.... zero gain is had from a properly customized afc.

Adding monsterous 7 hole injectors (which fuel way too hard down low to begin with) with a large turbo.... AFC will be your friend. I've seen folks in the past literally not be able to ever spool a set up without a lot of AFC work. Austin, I'm pretty sure had a lot of issues with his larger turbo until he did some more afc fiddling.

I've been reading everything I can lately. It'll be a learning curve for sure, if something doesn't work I'll change it. Pump tuning will take time but I'm not too scared of it. Some of the parts aren't perfect but I'm using what I've got

Don't be afraid to run it and see if you like it.

7 hole injectors (when "large) absolutely puke way too much fuel down low vs upper rpm fueling. Also, a 66 is a tremendously large turbo for a ve. A stage 2 pin is almost the same thing as an AFC delete, there is almost zero chance of tuning it.

If I were to do a puller only.........62fmw or 63, even a 64fmw with the 68 turbine and the "tight" .83 T4. That T4 won't be great on the street, but scream in the upper rpm.

And then I would use a 6x13 honed to 80lpm injector. A 5x18 would pull hard, but it would be in the upper rpm.... again, fairly decent smoke show below 2000rpm.

I think the 7's are big too but I have them. Probably go to a 6 hole or large 5 later on depending on results. The pin was already in the truck so worth a shot I suppose. I really don't think the 66 is too much for a truck that pulls (note Austin's 466) I know with a lot simpler set up my last VE pulled fine to 4100rpm so that will help keep the turbo in a happy range I think.
If the goal was a fast tow rig then yes a 62 would be great.

Did you personally buy the 7x.023? Or are they stamped on the side?

I've seen a lot of DAP nozzles......and all of the 7 holers that I've personally seen, are stamped something that they are not. I've seen a half dozen or so that say 7x.023.

There have been quite a few 3rd genners switch from 366's to 466's or 467's and found the s400 spools better (granted I'm guessing a lot of those 366's have the 80/74 turbine wheel which I don't think is as good of design as the s400's 83/74 turbine wheel)

As far as I remember Austin's truck is running 6x16's, and yes he's running a very tight afc. It sucks his 14mm ve seized up though. That thing gave me hope
