Recommend a turbo

Postby Higbean » Mon Aug 10, 2015 8:04 am

Guys, I would like to cool my egt's down with the hopes of better economy and a bit more power. Here are my specs.

1978 Ford Crew
1993 I/C 12v with stock injectors (I believe)
A518 with shift kit, Spec Rite T/C and Revmax kit
Diamond Eye 4" exhaust
4.10 gears
37" tires
Ground fuel pin
3600 spring
timing bump
Fuel screw turned, Starwheel up, smoke screw up
Power stroke inter cooler

At 65mph I'm cruising at 850-900 degrees. I can hit 1250 pretty easily and a lot easier if I turn the fuel screw in more. (Right now I have the fuel screw backed out to keep the idle down.) I don't tow anything heavier than 2,200 lbs. It's a play truck/hunting truck and I'd love to have better range/mileage with less worry about egt's. I've not done injectors but would consider doing them as well if that would help.

I'd sure like to go with a better turbo that wouldn't cost too much and would bolt right up but would also spend the money if that's not doable. Please throw me some suggestions.

he351cw, but not a direct bolt on.

S300G, needs hx40 d/p flange.

HX35 will probably actually be enough for you. However........play with your timing more, and get a better air filter and see if things change.

Oops, I left out the BHAF. Have been playing with timing a bit. Will look at the HX35. Thanks!

I've never ran or been in a truck with a HE351CW, but I've heard good things about them.

I have experience with a BD superB (s300g) and I was quite impressed with the results. The truck we ran it on was a big heavy turd, equipped with 36/14.50s and 3.54 gears. That charger helped drop egts even with larger injectors. I liked how quick it spooled, and the punch it gave over a very broad power band.

I think ether of those two chargers would compliment the VEs fueling characteristics well.

Seems like you are running hot for supposedly stock IC injectors. In all of my trucks, I was never able to hit more than 1100*, pulling, racing, or towing.

HE351CW gets my vote. I love mine!

At 70, I run 8-900 EGT in my 93 on the flat, with 4-5psi boost. It will get toasty (and peg a 30psi gauge at 1/2 throttle) if I get on it, but not bad. Hungry Diesel 5x11s, 150cc pump, piston lift pump with a custom spring- fuel pressure bottoms at 7psi. HX35-16 with a 60mm cold side wheel. With your tires, tranny, and mods, I don't think you're too far off the mark.

It would be a minimal difference, but have your valves been lashed in a while? My truck had 172k (I'm sure the valve covers hadn't been off in a WHILE) and my EGTs dropped 30 degrees at WOT when I adjusted valves. I just set mine at .010 intake and .020 exhaust (factory specs). A lot of guys tighten up lash slightly to get more air in and exhaust out. .018 exhaust and .008 intake is fairly common.
