HX35/12 or HX35/16 with 4.10s

Postby spencerdiesel » Wed Oct 28, 2015 7:10 pm

Hey everyone, my truck is a 5 speed IC 4wd , rock stock except for pyro, THD fuel pin and 366 spring. I have a PDR 16 cm housing I could install, but I don't want to stick it on the h1c because it'll still be an h1c haha. I want an HX35. My biggest question is: should I keep the 16cm to maybe put on the HX35, or should I sell it? Unfortunately the truck has 4.10s. The only reason I would even consider putting the 16cm on the HX would be because my commute consists of nearly all highway miles, and I feel the 12cm would be a restriction.....but then again the 16 is non WG. What is yall's opinion? 4.10s and HX35/12 too restrictive at high speeds? I can hit 1250 now (w/stock h1c) but thats holding at 91 mph.

4.10 and a 16cm housing, it will almost never spool, unless you are towing. However, if you are going to run high speed with the truck, the 12cm will give you high boost (low mpg).

Thanks RC. I agree, and 4.10s don't help. My biggest need is mpg, and my current 21cm is on the other end of the spectrum: it doesn't have really any boost at cruise. If I had the HX35/16 on, would it be more efficient for cruising because it is actually "working"?

The lower the cruising boost, the better the economy. Unless you are smoking.

Thanks, makes sense to me. Any recommendations for what I should do? I'd like more cfm when on the throttle (and more cfm more efficiently), but not at the expense of cruise mpg.......I'd love love love to swap in 3.54s but that takes time patience and $. HE351 would be great but same issue as HX35/12 for me. Anybody at all with 4.10s and close to stock tire height, all opinions welcome.

I realize me just going to 3.54 would answer all this..... :(

HE351CW makes more boost than the hx35 at cruising.

I personally would just run an hx35/12 and see how it goes.

I wouldn't run a 12 on truck with 4.10 gears. They really choke the motor at higher RPMs. I'd put a gated 14 on the HX35 or put a 60mm comp wheel and gated 14 on a H1C. Runs cool and tows great. Won't be quite a responsive as a 12, but it'll be able to breathe and get good mileage.

Are you sure you have a 21cm housing right now? Regardless I would run the 16cm on your stock H1C...the cold side of a HX35 is pretty much the same as the H1C...from what I have read. ;)

I agree that the 12cm would choke out with the 4.10's. I had 4.10"s in my crewcab for about 6 months, with stock size tires I was running 1950rpm at 62mph. After swapping to 3.54's, no other changes, I went up almost 1.5mpg. Keeping your speed down, and RPM in the 1600-2000rpm range will net you the best MPG's. ;)

Hey guys thanks for the advice! Yes 100% sure it was a 21cm. Got a free 18cm from my school so I put it on yesterday, it lights at roughly 1500 rpm in 4th (stock timing, nailing it @ 1100). The 21 lit at 1750 under same conditions. I'm surprised with 200 rpm sooner spooling my cruise EGT's didn't go up but maybe 20 degrees.

Oddly though (to me) EGT's at WOT are actually higher. And not just at high revs but 1500 to 2000 rpm as well. Thought the quicker spool would keep low rpm WOT temps lower.

I've always thought that HY's were a divided exhaust (albeit 9cm), but my friend said they're undivided like the 351.

Never seen one in person so I didn't know, are they undivided like a 341/51?

No divider on the hy. It's all wide open. It'll be a fun, instant spooling turbo.....but if you work that truck you hate it. The 12 housing was awesome for me,but was a touch warm......warm but barable. The 14cm housing is the money shot when you need a balance of work and play.
