upgrade turbo or replace?

Postby jmos4 » Sat Jan 30, 2016 9:45 am

Hi,

I've got a 89 non ic with a stock turbo, I have a 99 intercooler that I want to add. I am not that turbo savoy, but want to have a decent driver with maybe 300-350 hp. I have stock injectors and a few small pump mods, 3200 spring.

Can I upgrade this with a true 4" outlet and add a elbow or new housing to line up with the intercooler I have?

Or am I better off swapping the turbo with one from a newer truck, second or third generation and if so what's the best bang for the buck

Regards,

Best bang for the buck would be a used he351 or an s300g imo.

HE351CW or S300G like stated. Depending on how you use the truck, a 62SXE would work well too, but a turbo of that flow isn't needed at 300-350hp. At 350hp and above they are pretty happy though.

62/68/and then whatever turbine housing.

The 62SXE is basically an upgraded fmw. It has the efr compressor wheel and flows 76#/min, with a broader map than the fmw. It also gains a lot from the upgraded compressor housing.

It also comes std. with Borg's 360 thrust (instead of the already upgraded 6 pad like the fmw had).

Same turbine wheel and housing option.

Best thing ........ it is even more affordable at$1385 compared to $1500 for a (our pricing) "fully optioned" turbo (gated housing, v band compressor, etc... )

That turbo sounds pretty sweet. If you need to give one away for long term testing, let me know.

Right turbo, wrong map. Most sites seem to have misprints of the maps on the sxe turbos.

I need to download the latest bw catalog, they're usually in there. Either way, sounds very promising. I like the twins on my 2wd truck, but wouldn't mind something simple and cheaper on my 4wd. Sounds like it would work well with my stock non-intercooled injectors and leave lots of room to grow. Glad you mentioned it.

Maybe if anybody finds known good turbo maps they should start a thread for just turbo maps, and make it a sticky. ;)

That map is the one for the 369sxe. That 62 looks like it'd make a great secondary on The Roo Hunter while it still has a ve. I still want to try a gtx3582r as a secondary on brownie though
