TUNING!!!!!!!!!!!

Postby kyled19 » Mon Apr 25, 2016 7:14 pm

Im sorry if there is already a post about this but I couldn't find one. I need help tuning my truck. Im installing a gov spring and an he351 stock sticks. Unfortunately this pump has been messed with and I don't know whats been done. This is were I need help every suggestion is from stock position I need to know how to tune after the pump has been messed. Any help is greatly appreciated! I know the timing is bumped, If someone could tell me a place to start and then how to dial it in from there. I need info on power screw, star wheel and the "smoke screw" what they do and what they affect when they turn them, and how to tune them just right.

Also how are you guys controlling the he351cw. just put 12v key power to the solenoid? I want to keep the waste gate functional and make somewhere around 40psi

Smoke screw and star wheel are to tune when/how much/how fast fuel is allowed before boost. They have no effect on overall hp.
Smoke screw - How much fuel is allowed before boost. CW increases low end fuel
Star wheel - How quickly fuel comes on once there is boost. CW quickens fuel delivery
Full fuel screw - Alters overall fuel across the board. When the screw is turn CW, it pushes on a fulcrum lever that controls a slide collar. CW increases fuel and hp.

A gray haze before the turbo lights is what a lot of people tune to, though it will be difficult with your DennyT, as it goes almost immediately to full fuel with just a little boost. It can also allow o ring leakage. I'd suggest a better cut fuel pin; THD would allow a lot of bottom end smoke to be tuned out.

Thanks for the info can you tell me what the signs are , if any, of a run away before it happens. Also any reference points I can go off of for adjustment for example x amount of turns from bottomed out, or measurements so i have a good starting point?

Take the inlet hose off the turbo, and keep a piece of plywood or a 2x6 or 8 on hand to snuff it out if it starts to run away. After you adjust the fuel screw or change the governor spring, blip the throttle. If it hangs there and doesn't drop right back to idle you are close to runaway. Back the fuel screw out 1/8 to 1/4 turn until it drops normally. Some guys drive right on the edge of runaway, makes it kinda hard to shift a stick truck. ;)

Thanks all the info is really helpful any opinion on star wheel and smoke screw or should I just use those to try and rid of as much smoke as I can? Will back these things all the way back to rid of smoke hurt performance or anything else?

As long as the fuel pin gets full travel at full throttle/boost you will see no loss in power from backing the smoke screw and star wheel all the way up. These tuning adjustments are something you can play with to your hearts content until you get the low end smoke/lack of smoke you want.

Smoke gets old for most people (especially those around you), but a light grey ish plume (not coal black) seems to spool the quickest for me. If you get much more fuel it will be very hard to tune smoke out because of the agressive design of the Denny T pin.

How much low end smoke is there now and do you want less or more?

Synchros love those flaring rev shifts too

I want to get a THD pin, right now i have a lot of smoke! figured the bigger turbine housing and smaller exhaust housing of the he351 would help clean some of it up. Plus once i get the new turbo on I'm going to do some tuning to try and get rid of as much smoke as i can with the denny. And what do you mean by flaring rev shift?

The THD will allow you to run very clean on the low end (if you so choose via tuning), and will help not black out the sun when you fuel more overall later. I'd always get a mildly cut pin even if smoke is something you like, because the smoke screw is there if you feel the need for more. Cool thing about fuel pins is people will buy them off of you.

The flaring revs comment was made jokingly towards Pete. Almost like powershifting, rpm flaring up between shifts when you're close to runaway can make it so your synchros don't last as long. If you bang gears that is

Oh ok! anyone have any info on the best way to get the studs out of the manifold so i can mount my he351 every write up just says drill them out but what does that mean! And will a 4 inch v band work or do I have to have a 4 3/8 v band?

All I did was remove studs from he351, drill the holes out to fit the manifold, and bolt it on. The studs are a bit short but they hold no problem. Make sure to use antisieze.

I couldn't find the right vband flange/clamp quickly so i cut the flange off of another old he exhaust housing I had and made the downpipe. Used a 5" v band clamp, cut off the 'ear' that has the t bolt, shortened the inner part of the clamp, test fit and tacked the tbolt ear back on accordingly. Works fine.

Cheap way to do it if that's your thing.
