Wh1c 60mm upgrade with 64mm turbine shaft.

Postby josh_6bt » Thu Jul 07, 2016 9:00 pm

Alright gents I'll get right down to it. Plan is rebuild a spare h1c with a 60mm comp wheel and install on my 92 which has a stock wh1c. My question is I've been thinking about upgrading the turbine shaft to the hx40 64x76. Would this shaft be laggy with a 12cm housing? I know a few guys with 57/65 chargers and love em. So I thought this would be similar only with more air being introduced. My mods are in the sig. Future plans are 191s, 5x14s and bump timing to 18-20.

What you're asking is all relative to how you drive. Me I run an s476 single on my 6.7, and really like how it drives. It's by no means a quick spooler, but I don't find it too laggy. I have a 60mm upgrade wh1c with the wh1c turbine wheel as my secondary on my 1st gen, and I like the way it runs too. With the small primary feeding it it is not disappointing in the least, though I do need more timing which I'm a little hesitant to add due to stock headbolts

Ya your right, I guess tuning is the biggest factor on how the turbo will react. I guess which ever upgrade I do to the turbo will be better than it was.

Re: Wh1c/he351/hx40 hybrid (60/64/12)

*update* It's time to starting my wh1c hybrid. I pulled my stock wh1c off my truck, got it split and just my luck found 5 cracks on the inside of turbine housing. so I'm looking for a new housing. Question is would I not be better off to go to a larger cm housing? Say 14cm?. Is the 12cm going to choke to much on the top end? The little bit of research I did says it will. I'm leaning towards a non-gated 14, but what do you guys think? I do tow a little bit with this truck but it's mostly just a toy.

If you port the gate on a 12 it doesn't feel like it chokes to me (plus the pressure ratios I'm getting indicate that when my gate opens it bypasses slightly too much energy for the amount of fuel I have). I ported mine out to a little over 1 inch on the puck side, and the inside almost goes right to either side of the volute. Unfortunately mine is cracked as well, but I don't really have any other choice but to run it until I can afford to swap to an s362sxe, and 472sxe which will be almost 3 grand U.S.

Interesting. I may drill the wastegate hole out as well. Sounds like you will have a real nice set of twins

Yeah that 72sxe flows about 113lb/min which is technically enough for over 1000whp with enough fuel, so it'll be my best chance of getting to that 500whp mark

So I got my charger built and it clears up 80% of the smoke which is great but my problem is at 35+ psi it sounds like to me like it's surging. It sounds similar wastegate flutter like when your off the throttle but only under load. It's the worse when I floor it and when it gets over 35 psi. I have a spring wastegate which I adjusted so it only goes to 30-35psi but what can I do to fix this? Thanks.

What did you end up building? Does it do it at all rpms or just low-midrange?

I started with the stock wh1c, machined the comp side for a 60x86 he351 wheel and then I used the hx40 64x76 turbine shaft in a 12cm housing. Tuned it a little more this weekend and went for a 2hr test drive on the highway and I really like. Low egts, builds quick boost at high and low speeds, cleans up a lot of smoke. But it stills does the flutter. It only does when it's building boost. You can start to hear to at 25 then it gets worse the higher it goes. It's not bad you just have to ease in to the throttle and try to keep boost to 20-25. It does have great power tho even at those low numbers. I was talking with a buddy and he suggested maybe the wastegate is opening and closing rapidly while building boost. My boost gauge needle does jump around a lot when it does it. I have a spring wastegate on it because the air operated one wouldn't work for me. I was gonna try stiffer springs to see if that helps my problem.

Why not just wire the gate closed? Drive accordingly.

I run the same thing with a 14cm housing and no gate.....all the time and routinely see 30/35# out of it. With some different sticks I've seen a max of 45+a little. All with no gate and a 5speed.

Yes if the spring wastegate doesn't work out then I'll be forced to wire it shut.
