Clocking HE351 and Using the wastegate?

Postby Cburb » Thu Sep 15, 2016 5:48 pm

Ive been trying to read as much as i can, i originally was trying to figure out if i want a 62sxe or he351 but until i get a better clutch and further mods its probably best to use a he351, alot cheaper too.

I want to clock mine so it doesnt look real weird and piped strange but then everyone is saying you cant use the wastegate if you do so or at least that its a pain. Im curious what id have to do in order to make it work, i dont know a whole lot about turbos but i believe just welding it shut would be hard on the truck and the turbo when i let off with higher boost, id rather just have a working wastegate but not sure how and what to do to set it up right, i want this truck to be around 400ish hp.

I just have the H1C now and im pretty sure this truck has injector nozzles (havent looked yet), and most other common upgrades i can fuel it enough to easily bury my 35 psi gauge without a load or anything on it so i should be able to spin a 351 pretty good.

You have to clock it so when it is mounted the oil drain is straight down and the wastegate actuator arm has to be straight from the exhaust housing to compressor housing. It will look weird unless you build a spring gate or use an external gate. 400hp with just the 351 will be rather warm

Oh so the intake being on the top side is the only way they will line up? if i clock it to where its on the bottom like factory they wont line up for the arm? Im guessing id have to do the spring gate or external whatever i gotta do in order to get it to work, havent found a thread on how to or anything yet.

Yea i originally wanted to go straight to a 62sxe but i have been told id be better off the the he351 until i get more mods done, then sell the he351 after im ready for the 62sxe.

If further mods means headbolts, a 62/68 will have lower drive pressure than a 351. Heck, probably be easier on the clutch too, with all the low end ve fueling and quick boosting 351. No point in building it twice if you are planning on the 62 down the road anyways.

Im getting the A1 head studs same time when i get a turbo, see thats what i was originally saying to guys on cummins forum that id rather just get a 62sxe and not having to worry about making the 351 fit and then having to change it soon as i hit 400ish which would probably be soon, but they were trying to say it would be better to have a 351 now and then upgrade later... Didnt realize it could be easier on the clutch and stuff either...id love the fact that the 62sxe would install alot easier as well.

I just built a simple bracket to hold the wastegate actuator in the original position.

Tried to get a pic of it but it is pretty tight in that area of my truck. It bolts on to the ends of the studs that hold the turbo to the manifold.
