6x13 or similar injector tuning

Postby 79Powerwagon » Thu Mar 23, 2017 1:23 pm

Looking for what people's setups are running a 6x13 or similar injector. My set hazes pretty heavily. Pump is advanced to the head. Thin copper washers on injectors. He351cw. Stock mildly ground fuel pin. Eric said I may need to back off timing.

Opinions?

I would say you need more turbo

Hazes at idle or the smoke never clears at wot? Are they correct spray angle? What pop pressure?

I meant it hazes heavily at idle.

More turbo is on its way but surprisingly the HE cleans up quite a bit.

The turbo won't have any bearing on idle haze, unless it was passing oil. How is the haze on warm engine vs. cold?

Yes.

Cold is worse but still hazes hot. They are correct spray and pop pressure. Eric sets them a bit higher than factory.

I'm sure I just need to tweak it a bit.

Tryin to stir up some discussion

I hear you there, I'd love another injector thread! How much over 245 bar? The more pop pressure is increased, theoretically the more the injection event is retarded/delayed. Thus possibly needing a bit more advance for a bigger injector

Your going to have haze cold......you'll never get rid of it. There will always be some there. Pop off pressures, timing, spray angles and compression are the haze makers.
My money is on you need more timing.

Pertinent question here......your truck auto or manual?

I expected cold haze. That's fine. It's the clouds idling at the stoplight that are a bit annoying.

Truck is an auto.

Think I need advanced a tooth?

Also, I've heard when cold with fairly advanced timing, headgaskets are a bit sensitive if ran too hard. Where's the line there?

yes definitely jump a tooth but back the pump down to its factory marks or a shad lower to start wth.
Being it's an auto you may loose some lowend torque but if you have a sloppy converter it may make up for that. Honestly I've been thru all this....running sticks that big,you need a bunch of timing.
As for the head gasket thing......let it warm, keep the boost lower than 35/40# (op temp)and your good. Use your head and it'll like the timing

Is the smoke screw flush? Slide pin leaving a track to the shallowest part of fuel pin and lubed and moving freely? Did it haze with the new injectors before you bumped the timing to the head? As far as warmups for headgasket/engine life, treat it as you would yourself if you went to the gym. You don't just walk in and grab the heaviest weight you can lift and go hard, you'll most likely bugger yourself up. You gotta stretch and start with lighter weights and get warmed up. I keep boost under 10-12 psi until coolant temps are up, and do a couple moderate short pulls at 17-20 psi, then 25-27 psi, at which point, imo, it's ready for the beans.

Thanks guys. Good info.

I have the smoke screw backed off quite a bit. I haven't had the fuel pin out in a year or more so that I will check. I had the timing bumped before the injectors so not sure.

The truck had a loping issue after I used some injectors I got off Craigslist. Bought these new 6x13s and the lope calmed down a lot but still a trace of it at idle. Im hoping the other sticks I tried didn't damage anything but the time is coming for a head gasket r&r. I'd like to get the head milled flat, new gasket and socket head allens bolts installed before I crank the timing.

I do have a very sloppy converter and gobs of low end torque now so I think I should be ok. This truck slides around like a hockey puck  I wanted to try and run hydraulic oil to try and tighten it up some. The HE definitely helps down low. But even wastgated it blows right through to 40 psi

Took some material off the inside of afc top hat to get the pin to sit a bit higher. Seems to have helped a bit.
