Marine Application HX-40

Postby matthewh » Sun Mar 26, 2017 9:04 am

Buddy works at a marina, and scored a good used HX-40. Down side is it has a liquid cooled exhaust housing. We were debating whether we could toss the liquid cooled housing, and toss on a exhaust housing off a truck, and whether we would have to swap the exhaust wheel as well. Turbo came off a 370hp 6bt.
If this is possible, would an exhaust housing off an HX-35, or H1C fit, or would we need to find a truck HX-40 for parts? Don't know what would interchange, if anything

I'd guess that they are probably swappable, as far as turbine wheel size goes. But why? I'd plumb it in to the heater lines which are right there. That housing is probably worth at least double what a standard turbine housing is, and hot shutdowns would be much less of an issue, the engine wouldn't have to swallow half baked oil from hot shutdowns, heater would blow more heat, engine would warm up slightly faster..makes me want one lol. Or sell it for a profit and buy an s300. Imo not a turbo worth putting money into just to downgrade it.

Except you'd probably overheat using your coolant instead of ocean water :(

I don't think it will matter if you cool it or not. You have to remember, marine engines run at high throttle high load constantly, hence the need for the extra cooling. I would throw it on and see how hot it runs on your pyro. If it runs too hot, then plumb it, or swap it out.

H1C and HX35 have a 60 by 70 turbine wheel. HX40 wheel is a 64 by 76, it will not run in the stock housing

For the most part marine exhaust manifolds and turbo's are water cooled so your boat doesn't catch fire. It lowers " underhood " below deck temps. Not all marine turbo's are water cooled, but I have never seen a marine engine without water cooled exhaust manifolds. I had a T6354M perkins years back and the turbo was not water cooled. Had to wrap the hot side of the turbo so it wouldn't catch the motor box on fire. Came close a few times.

We thought about plumbing it into the cooling system, on whatever it ends up on. Wondered about swapping housing cause were not sure how big the exhaust housing is. There's some cast numbers on it, but nothing definite like the H1C's has

I always wanted to water jacket my manifold.

Just always figured it'd be cool.

There would actually be something of a performance boost for the turbo.

It's common practice in big steam driven turbine motors such that, after a number of progressively larger turbine stages to extract the power from the progressively lower pressure steam, to have it play into a water cooled condenser. In a closed steam power loop, void of air, the condenser drops the pressure at that point, well into a vacuum.

The cold-walled exhaust housing would strip just that much more of the exhaust gas's heat (compared to a regular housing), making a lower pressure after the turbine. The net result is an increased pressure difference (delta p) across the turbine.

- Roughly. ;)

It would be of no consequence in our mess IMO. I'm not gonna do it to my heap.

OK, I need to step away from the keyboard . . . . .
