If I side stepped the clutch in 3rd gear everything would be on the ground. :notfair: :pottytrain:

EGT's at full throttle seem to be staying right at 1500 no matter how long I stay full throttle. This of course is with an empty truck... I haven't towed anything yet, but that will be coming soon! As far as scattering bthe drivetrain, I am nervous about that... Only did the one clutch dump. Just wanted to see... I think having an open differential is on my side! Plus the single cab/ single wheel configuration.

I still have my intercooler, 188/220 cam, head stud's, and fluidampr sitting around waiting to go in. I figure while I'm at it I'll put on a Hamilton high swirl stage1 head, just need to figure out if I want to have it o-ringed or not... What do you think?

I think you'd be the 1st 1st gen with a Hamilton head lol. If you have that kind of money to blow, I say go for it. Although I think you'd be money (and hp) ahead with a new stock head mildly ported and a "big" ve from thd. I'd chance a guess and say that ham head and cam and intercooler would lower boost enough to not really require o-rings, as long as the block is perfectly flat. If you're planning on more fuel and timing, and possibly twins later down the road, o-rings might come in handy lol. I have no experience with o-rings, but think they'd be a little more picky with re-torques on the head studs.

If the head is off it should be oringed before going back on. It's what, $300? Way cheaper to do it now than after you've got a leaky gasket.

Also, boost by itself isn't what pops head gaskets, it's cylinder pressure.

I would think that by the time I had a head rebuilt ported (I don't have time or desire to screw with that) and cut for O-RINGS, the cost will be the majority of the Hammy... If it is true that I'd be the first 1st gen with one that sounds like incentive to do it as well! I fully grasp your point about it not being the cheapest route.

I'm also well aware that boost isn't the sole factor in blowing head gaskets. Needing retorques is true I believe, but I'm not sure on how often it should be done. Also don't have plans for twins, but I'm seeing how these things go, and you never know. Everybody likes more HP! At any rate this truck needs to reliably pull my snowmobile trailer up to the snow, and pull my car trailer occasionally.

O-rings were about 300 for me, and I did plan on compounds at a later date. I studded it with ARP as well. I torqued it, ran it easy for about a week, then retorqued it cold. Never been touched since, and it's been several years and lots of 45-48psi of boost blasts on it.
I think you need to install the intercooler and the cam, with no fuel changes, then run it and see what the EGTs are before going the next step. Then you know how big of a difference they made. Then you do the head, (I would o-ring it for the price for safety's sake) and stud it and don't look back! :thumright:

My biggest issue is to put the cam in I have to check piston to valve clearance, and degree the cam in. I don't see a way to do that without pulling the head, and if I pull the head, I might as well put a new one on... So here we are... I'm think I've been talked into going for the o-ring option. So, I'll be making a bunch of changes at once, so I won't get good data for you guys on what did what, sorry... Head, cam, studs, jump a tooth, and the fluidampr will all happen at once. Then I can focus on the intercooler, and I'll blanket the turbo and manifold.

Looking forward to the results. Just make sure the block is flat, with o-rings I'd imagine there is reduced clamp load on the rest of the gasket. That said, I've never heard of anyone getting their block resurfaced before changing the head lol.

You need to check piston to valve with a 188/220 cam? Maybe I'm thinking of the 188-200 that's a drop in.
You do realize you need to change the lifters too, right? I didn't see you mention it anyplace so I thought I'd throw that out there.
You might as well change the IC too, you'll have the whole front off anyways.

Yup I have to check clearance, and degree it in. And yes I have 24v lifters, and Hamilton push rods. As far as the intercooler goes... I don't have one, it's a '90! But I have I water to air I'll be plumbing in soon. You're right though, should probably mount the radiator for it. I also have a second gen radiator I scored for 50 bucks I'm gonna try to shoe horn in....

2nd gen rad might be a tight fit for the fan, you may have to go with a later 12 valve fan for more clearance.

Definitely going to be tight... That radiator is huge in comparison! 2nd gen fan setup should work. I think it's been done before... Good to know there's at least two people still on this forum!
