Unhooked ksb on N/IC

Postby Remps » Fri Dec 14, 2018 8:48 pm

The last couple weeks I was using my truck I was running it with the ksb wire unhooked as it seems to run cleaner and has more power. Is this going to hurt the pump any? Should I hook it back up and add more timing instead? Timing is bumped 1/8 or 3/16 already.

Ive Been super curious of the answers to this too. Won’t hurt anything electrically I’d say because non IC (as you stated) takes no elec power for timing to stay advanced.

But I’d love opinions on pump health internally with full time advance.

You say it has more power with the KSB unplugged even being 1/8” advanced from stock already? What sticks and pump setting does this truck have?

I dont see how it could harm the pump at all. It doesnt make any difference as far as wear/stress, just rotates the roller housing.

Fuel screw is about 1/4 turn from runaway, 3200 spring, grinded fuel pin, stock 4x12's, will hit close to 50 psi with a leaky lift pump, ksb hooked up or not. I hooked it back up again the last couple times I used it to go to work, but couldn't really tell any difference now due to a complete lack of traction with the snow now. I could get on the throttle more aggressively without making a cloud of smoke with the ksb unhooked, and gained power from bottom to top. I'm assuming the difference is the timing, and not the change in case pressure?

Won't hurt a thing. However, keep in mind the non-IC engines use a wax motor type KSB vs the solenoid type on the IC engines. Even with power removed, engine heat will eventually close the KSB and reduce timing. So, I would be hesitant to add more timing. Best option would be remove the KSB and add timing.

Hmm..didn't think about heat soak affecting the ksb.

Can one put a ksb off an intercooled pump onto a non-intercooled pump?

I recently installed rebuilt I/C/IP on my crew cab, I never hooked up ksb and it runs rougher than a cob for first 5-10 minutes in this cold weather then smooths out after that... it’s an industrial injection with m/h spacer +hair timing,
