Degreeing in a Camshaft

Postby Fnschlaud4620 » Wed Jan 09, 2008 9:15 pm

Say you need to degree in a camshaft, how would you go about moving it.

The end of the cam has just a regular Woodruff key? correct? Couldn't you buy an offset Woodruff key to move the gear on the cam like a gasser or is an adjustable cam gear the only option.

I see that offset woodruff keys are in 2,3,4,5, deg. offsets

are the offsets in crank deg. or cam deg? Can some one please explain how one would change things

Thanks a lot.
Sorry I always have questions and no answers.

You can use the VP44 injection pump keys to offset the cam. The degrees listed on the key are in crank degrees so they move the camshaft twice as far, so a 1deg key is a 2 deg change in Intake Centerline. However whoever you are getting the keys from might already be compensating for that and thus what they say is a 5deg offset is only 5 deg on the cam meaning its really a 2.5deg key.

cool - the good stuff - cam timing

cam is brain of the engine

cam timing is very important

my motorcycle engines are really neat cuz in and ex cams are seperate, so not only can you move the whole package but you can change lobe seperation which is ground into our truck cams

did you degree it in (the stocker) before you took it apart to see what the intake centerline was????

really curious

bet it is some crazy number - prolly less than 100

lol

you can change your whole power band and more importanly max output by moving the camshaft

really curious to hear what you find and what you do and how it works

congrats for not just slammin it in there and not as much as checking to see where it is

I just picked up a cam for a 24V I have been told it is the best cam to start with because the centerline is 108*

I am getting it reground for my truck, but I am planning on degreeing it to a certain mark.

it doesnt matter what centerline is ground into a cam if you will be using offset keys or an adj gear and putting it where ever you want

the cl is just where the #1 intake lobe is ground in relation to the key way

how much lift did it have when you got it?

dur @ 050?

what are you having ground into it?

where you gonna put it?

don

ps - 108 is really retared from where i was thinking they ran them

that is weird, really weird

remember this when you degree it in - these motors have like 16:1 static when stock - every degree you adv the cam will increase effective compression ratio

good luck and keep us posted

have you ever degreed a cam in before?

dont rely on any factory marks...

(they are usually inaccurate)

use a degree wheel and a dial indicator

The 12V is 102IC
The 370 Marine is 105 IC
A 24V is 108 IC
A Common rail is 98 IC
