Titanium Retainer Durability Issues?

Postby Begle1 » Thu Mar 13, 2008 7:21 am

How much life can I expect out of my Haisley titanium retainers before failure?

Running 60 pound OEM springs.

I have used TI retainers on gassers before. One set I had on a stock car engine. We ran them for 6 years. That set of heads was on 6 different block assy's. RPM range was 8k to 12k.

So with our low RPM ranges and lighter valve springs. I wouldn't worry to much.

My reason for concern...

Posts #67 and #71 in particular.
There are a couple of things here I want to mention. Firstly, the use of titanium retainers for daily driven engines is a death warrant for durability. There really is no way around it. The material is just not best for long term in this application. It will fail with prolonged use.
That scares me to use mine.

Seems like there are quite a few people who say they're not for anything that is expected to last over 15,000 miles...

I run stainless retainers. I treid titainium on some baot engines and didnt have much luck keeping them together. went to a stainless and have had no problems. I have also used aluminum retainers and had very good luck with them on endurance applications

Know where I could find stainless retainers for my Cummins?

unless ur turnin 4000+ rpm an dual springs n such you dont need more than the stockers
even the 60# springs arent makin much over 200 or so psi over the nose

What he said.

What does Haisley have to say about their keepers and lockers long term reliability?

Titanium is an extremely strong and pretty light material, but it wears kind of easily. Even on titanium joints made for peoples hips and shoulder have to be coated in some nitrogen compound i believe, or else it'll wear out. Thats bone on titanium. think about steel on titanium in your engine.

Yeah, it seems like there are as many people who say they're indestructible as people who say they break.

I guess I'll just figure it out for myself...
