How to remove the AFC lever

Postby fergavs » Mon Mar 17, 2008 11:58 am

I need to pull my AFC lever for more power. I am not sure exactly where it is or what to do. I did a search but didnt see any exact info. Can some one point me to a "how to" thread or just post instructions. I have done the 3200 spring my self but thats as deep as I have been in the VE. Thanks. Also I have an exploded view of the view with a numbered parts list. To other people that have this diagram could you tell me the number of the lever?

As far as I know, if you can swap governor springs, you can get deep enough into the pump for this mod. http://dens-site.net/Dodge_CTD/Governor_Spring/ shows the stock foot. Scroll down the page until you see the picture of the new spring by itself. Just below that are three pictures showing the inside of the pump with the new spring installed. Click on the left picture and it will show a full-sized pic with the foot circled. Hope this helps. Oh yeah, you probably don't want to grind it completely off, start small and work your way up.

I thought I would just completely remove it. Isnt that going to give me the most power?

I guess from what I have heard the foot ground is better for low end torque than complete removal. However I think that the removal of the lever is the best way to go. It's pretty darn smokey on a pedal to the floor though.

Ok you know how to put in a gov spring. So when you have the pump top off, for an non-ic truck you take out the two flathead plugs, if its ic then you have to punch out the two bb's. They are located right underneith the high rpm and the idle screws. Then with a small punch push out the pin through one side or the other and the lever should fall right out. On reassembly some people put the pin back in and some leave it out. I always put the pin back in with a little daab of silicone on the treads of the plugs or on the bb's. The put her back to gether the way she came apart!

Clear as mudd!

if it dont come out easy? how easy did your bb's come out? if i didnt have quality tools i would not have been able to get mine out. they were in there really good. a punch press is the easiest way to remove the bb's and the shaft but if you dont have access to one use a punch and a hammer with a socket on the back side

i never use silicone where fuel is involved

you could put some semi-hardening permatex on them if ya want to, or some yama-bond, but i didnt and mine doesnt leak at all...

let us know what you think once you have it out

Thanks guys. Should be done by the weekend. I've seen guys post about as much as a 10psi increase. Is 4-6psi realistic?

dt mine came out really easy with a punch, you were probaly punching the wrong way

i use the stuff that you mix together and in a few minuts it gets hard, and rubed the balls in that
4 to 6psi is relistic

Any type of epoxy, I use JB weld. Seals and can be removed pretty easy for follow up or further R&D work.

after you swedge them back in they wont leak but you can put what ever you want on them

why put glue on something that isnt gonna fall apart tho?

or sealer on something that doesnt leak?

i dont get it...
