pump and boost questions (now with Pics!)

Postby dvst8r » Sun Apr 13, 2008 5:19 pm

Well I finally got around to turning up the pump, now I have a few questions. Here are the specs on the truck as of right now:

-90 W250 Non Ic'd, 5spd, Welded front and rear, 40" michelin XL's
-Holset HX35 - 12 From a gyrotrac, waste gate wired shut, as the actuator bracket is right where the oil drain is on a truck setup.
-Pump turned up 3 1/8 turns (right to the point of runaway)
-Pump pushed to the head
-Starwheel about stock maybe a little above
-Fuel pin turned to max
-T27 smoke screw ALL the way up.
-Max and Min screws all the way out
-Stock 3" crush bent exhaust with muffler (I know, I know this is going soon)

Now it will spin the HEAVY 40's in second gear from a roll, chirp them into 3rd, hit 1500+ egt in 3rd gear under moderate throttle, and hit 45psi under full throttle.

I live at approx 2700ft ASL.

My Questions:

-Is the HX35-12 gonna live at 45psi or will I need to rig up that waste gate?
-How are you guys getting 4 plus turns without running away?

I bet I still have another 4 turns plus that I could go, that is if it didn't run away, and I'm approx an 1/8th of a turn from that. Would really like if I could get more out of it, but such as life.

Good to know about the HX35, as I have both an HT60, and a GT42, but no time to fab up the twins for at least another month.

I will put my street tires back on it tomorrow (32's) I'm sure now instead of just a little rubber at the beginning of 3rd, it will smoke them all the way through. I will take a pic in the morning of it on 40's with NO lift. ;)

40" militaries and a welded front and rear diff!!

I love it, bravo!

Did you take a chop saw to the fenders?

Just a small trim on the front fenders with an angle grinder. Could have done it a lot cleaner, but really didn't care at that point. Needs a little more wheel offset as well, it rubs near full turn right. Hits the idler arm off the steering box.

I think I will get some extra rear springs and put them up front, should move the axle forward a bit, and give it about 3" - 4" lift, and then do a shackle flip in the rear, and make up a traction bar. I really want to put a set of MOG 404's under it, but we will see how it progress's. I thought I had an action shot of it going uphill pushing through 4ft of snow, but I guess it wasn't on this camera, I will ask my friend I was wheeling with tonight.

Just be sure and do your research before you go buy a set of Mogs. My buddy put 404's under his BTF chassis and regretted it. The buggie worked great, but for the time, effort, and money he put into those axles he said he would have rather gone with built 60's.

404's, Hummer rims, 42" TSLs

Thanks for posting up those pictures, it looks just as awesome as I had pictured it in my mind!

Those tires are really skinny! When I saw the height I thought they would be like 18 inches wide!

Logger retread winter tires. Normally guys run these chained up.

As far as mog's I know a guy that is running them under a 77 dodge, with a 440. Basic pinion conversion, some 4" springs all the way around (I thought it was overkill) Converted the brake lines (metric on the mogs), ran the locker lines (iirc bicycle brake cable was used here), and I think the steering setup was close as is. Iirc the mogs are like 3" wider wms to wms. Then I would just run the same style xl 40's except on 20" rims. (probably some double beadlocks)

More important then that right now is getting the twins done, I hit 1800+ degrees today trying to pull my buddy out after his starter died. I also need to get a better clutch, mine was a little warm and smelly by the time i got him out. I think I will have to order up a twin disk puller here in a bit.

Anyway it is really really muddy right now, so i better go wash it. :)

Awesome, I guess it really just depends on how much you want to build the mogs, my buddy went all out on his, completely rebuilt them. He used some big springs to keep the lockers engaged permanently. He thought about running a cable to the cab, but decided he would never unlock them anyway since it was a trail only buggy.
