169417 turbo

Postby Cschafer » Wed May 28, 2008 1:59 pm

I pulled off the intake today and found about .025'' endplay on the turbo. HTT said pull it off and send it to them for a minumum of $300. I was thinking I wanted the 71mm wheel and 14 housing anyway. Is the 169417 exactly what all the companies are scalping you for with there name on it or is there some differences. Local truck store can have a new one hear on friday for $700 as long as it's the same I'll get it coming.

how do you know that? Do you have a book that tells all of the turbo specs? Do you know what common part number to order from a regular turbo place, rather than getting raped by Htt or I.I.?

Thanks

how much bigger? Wastegate is not important because I'm gonna run a external gate anyway but spoolup is. Will the housing on my s300 fit it. Can you get a part number for any other s300 combos, like one with a wastegate or smaller non gated or something with a 74mm ex wheel like the silver bullet? Thanks for the help.

the housing prolly isnt set up for a 4" v-band clamp either so you might want to keep that in mind. post your findings please, cuz thats exactly what i am looking for (62-74/16)

whos waste gate are you running?

and what power level do you plan on using that turbo at?

any towing?

thanks, don

Fnschlaud4620,

Most of the specs were posted in the "P-pump chasin" thread. This website (http://www.centralturbos.com/pop-werks7a.htm) has almost all of the dimensions listed for the 169417. It lists the turbine housing as a 1.15 A/R ratio. Anybody know what that is in cm^2?

I posted my answer on TDR. Will do so again here.
A .70 housing is considered a 12, a .80 is around a 14 so yours might be around a 21?

Thanks for the info GLHS. I'm not entirely sure that you can say that a .70 is always a 12cm^2 though. A/R is a ratio so it will be affected by the two inputs. For instance 12/17.1 = .70 A/R but so does 16/22.9 (if my understanding of A/R is correct, I'm using this site for guidance: http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbobygarrett/tech_center/turbo_tech102.html). A/R is affected by how tall or short a turbo is, right?

it is how big the housing is

dont know why they have to have two diff methods of measure?

area divided by radius has been around how long

dont know what you mean by tall or short

I don't own this turbo I was thinking about buying one because my htb2 has end play and it's not big enough to go for 500 as a single. I don't really want to waste 700 dollers on somthing I can't spool either. If the a/r was closer to a 18 or 19 I might try it, it should make some good power. I think I'm just gonna send my htb2 in and have it rebuilt.

I was trying to say that a/r is influenced by housing size both in cross section (cm^2) and by radius of the housing (cm). In theory, you could have two turbos with the same a/r, but different cross sections due to the difference in the radius of the turbos. I was trying to say that a shorter or longer radius would change the ratio. In this case, I don't think that a ratio is the easiest method of distinguishing turbo sizes. Although, I suppose it allows for relative performance comparisons between turbo models (i.e. a 62/71 turbo with a .70 vs. a 1.15 A/R) but using it between models is less than ideal, in my opinion. Could be that my limited understanding of turbos prevents me from fully appreciating a/r, but I think it would be better if they would post cross section areas as well as a/r.

From the link to GDS' website that roxxx posted in his thread (http://www.gdsdieselparts.com/s-300_(b1_2)_turbos.htm), for the S300 turbo a .70 A/R = 12.06 cm^2 and a .80 A/R = 14.77 cm^2.
