I don't get it......

Postby eyoung429 » Wed Jan 24, 2007 7:53 am

Was driving into work this am and came up to a light...little dork in a turbo z pulled up next to me in the right turn lane and was revving his engine.. Idiot had been tailgating me for about 2miles. Didn't think I had a chance but thought what the heck...brought her up to 2200, light changed.. heard him spin. Mine hooked and I didn't let off till about 70mph. Looked back and saw him coming up fast but I was at least 8-10 lengths out. He followed me into the gas station and asked me to pop the hood.. He couldn't figure out how I beat him..

To tell the truth, neither did I. He told me about some of the upgrades he had done to his car and stated there is no way that I could have beat him. I was told by the PO that he hadn't tweeked the engine or tranny.

We both lined up after fueling up and did it again....same thing

I don't know how I did it. Is there any way to tell what's been done to my rig other than what I have already done in my sig? I thought she was pretty quick but not quick enough to beat very much. Still relatively new to the area and don't have access to a dyno.

my brothers 85 turbo z was a 17 second car dead stock, after some mods he got it into the 15's, and now with plenty mods, it runs low 13's. i don't know what our trucks run stock, but with a few mods shouldn't be too hard to get them in the low 16-high 15's range.

as for mods, other than checking to see if the lock collar is still on the fuel screw, i don't know how you would know if anything's been done.

just enjoy the moment

Ok, just came back in....On the stock pumps...the power adj screw that is behind the lines....isn't there supposed to be a locknut, collar, and the screw?

if so, I have only the locknut and screw.

What does your EGT gauge tell you?

BTW, What is a 3.73 gear?

During both runs, I had only aprox 935 on egt, 9psi after lp, 29lbs on boost.

3.73 is the gear ratio that the po installed.

with the collar gone, i would venture to say someone has tweaked the pump. you could look on the turbo housing for size to see if it's been changed. if the po installed 3.73's, i'm sure he would have done other mods.
dragstrip time :D

That sounds real low for a tweaked pump. What turbo(s) are you running and what kind of water injection? How large is the charge air cooler

My entire truck is tweaked and I bury the pyro with just a short run up to, say, 100 MPH

Something your not telling us? Where is the pyro tap located at?

No water injection yet. Turbo looks stock Holset 16. Intercooler is out of an '02 or '03 F350

Haven't pulled any of the injectors or opened the pump yet

I don't have a muffler

tap is 5in back from snail housing on exhaust.

approx 17 degrees outside. (at least about 5am)

Also....I found that my truck has some serious imbalance on the front tires....I thought I was gonna rattle my teeth out....will have to check and see if I got all the snow/ice outta the rims. hence the reason I was getting out of it @70 or so.

If I understand correctly, to put this in my terms, your pyro sensor is about five inches down stream of the turbine housing?

That would make sense as it is going to be several hundred degrees off (lower) than what the actual temperature is comming out of the combustion chamber. You want to prevent melting the piston, not the exhaust pipe. Your probably about 1,200 to 1,300 °F ....no. Make that 1,400°

Add at least 300 degrees to your reading for a post turbo pryo. You are border line on EGT temps.

For a more accurate reading, put the pyro probe in the exhaust manifold. It sounds to me like someone's messed with your pump/injectors to get 29psi.
