head work???

Postby hassy21 » Thu Oct 16, 2008 3:22 am

i was looking into doing some head work on my truck since i got some other engines in the machine shop. I was wondering what to tell them if they ask me what i want done because i dont think they mess around with diesel stuff to much. I want to port the head but i can do it myself. Can you tell after a good port job in hp or just something else to say you did to it.

porting the head on anything will be a hp gain so i would say yes. depending on how extensive you want to go with it depends on how much you will notice it. i mean anything is better then stock for the most part. you'll get lower egt's cause of more air flow and faster spool up. if i were u if its gonna be just a daily driver and not a full out race truck i would just take a sand paper roll on the end of a die grinder (no finer then 60 grit) and just smooth out the casting in there a little. you'll notice a difference in just that. and then after that just do the typical port match and call it good.

Porting the head will also lower your boost because of less restriction. Depending on your turbo this will allow you to adjust the wastegate back up which will also help add power. I find a diamond cutting bit is nicer to use for porting then the sand paper, also a little faster.

I would also consider o-ringing the head while you have it off the truck.

Thats cool, and sorry for hijacking the thread, but anybody got any info on o-ringing and how to do it.
Thanks.

youve gotta have a special fixture to cut the o rings in heads. theres a certain depth (i believe around .02-.03 deep) and a certain width. and i dont know if you do on diesels but on gassers you have to run a copper head gasket.

Not really. Anyone with a good bridgeport milling machine, the right tool holder and an old head gasket can do it. Center the o-ring groove on the fire ring of the head gasket and shoot for around .010" to .012" protrusion from the wire. I use a hard stainless wire, anywhere from .040" to .050".

I think you are thinking of fire rings where they need to run a special or a modified head gasket.
