Beginners starting line.

As you may have read in my welcome thread, I am new to this site, and as most newcomers do, I need advice as to where to start. I am not looking to have the most power on the block or be the first one up a hill, but when I hook on to a 35' gooseneck with a 20,000lb load on it, I would like to pull it a little better than it always has. After reading tons of stuff, I figured that lots of people are looking for power for different reasons and applications, so I just want to do things on the cheap that will help and not break the bank. The truck is a 93 W250 with the factory i/c,K&N airfilter in the factory box and 4" exhaust w/out muffler. The pump was untouched until recently when I took the fuel screw out and removed the collar then added two turns from where it was. After I did that, the motor would not idle below 1000rpm. With the idle screw backed out enough to not touch anything and the idle would not come down, I backed the screw out 1 turn and that is where its at now. I also rotated the factory fuel pin to where it is farthest from the shaft. I am going to pull my pump off soon and reseal it because the governor shaft is leaking,so while I am there I will install the governor spring that I got with my gasket kit. What should I look at doing for the next few things? I really cant afford a new turbo or injectors right now, but I do have an extra turbo from a 94 cummins in my shop.

Backing off the idle screw may not be enough to lower the idle. You may have to loosen up the throttle linkage on that little metal bar that is threaded on both ends. If you turn up the pump enough, your gonna probably want to reindex the throttle shaft.

honestly first thing is gauges, at least a pyro... water meth is a good thought too and a bigger intercooler... and once you get that if the pump mods are not enough, you will want injectors... i am not sure if they put the hx-35 on 94's but if it is, you will probably like the switch alot...

I'd say gauges, timing bump, and start saving your pennies for injectors. They help out the i/c trucks a lot as far as power goes.

I have a pyrometer and manifold psi gauge. I have not hooked the pyrometer up yet though. I need to weld a bung in the exhaust pipe in order to complete that. I will check to see what that other turbo is later.

Put the pyro in the manifold. If you put it in the pipe, you can cook the engine and the pyro will read ok. After turbo is at least 300* cooler than before.

plus you get no response... i had mine mounted after, and never saw anything above 12 and it took forever to get there on a hard pull... then i moved it, and dear god, i would jump up to 12.5 quick and rise the 13.5... if i had my pymp turned up higher i could have cooked some goods and never even known it was coming...

where have you guys been putting them at on the manifold? Every one of my big trucks have got them mounted about 5" after turbo. I wonder if I should change those too?

The rear side just before the turbo. I always take the turbo off, but some people drill in steps with the engine running.

Just before the turbo, on the back 1/2. There is a divider in the middle. Most people drill the rear, but the front is ok too.

Anyone got a link to a thermocouple install on the manifold?
