93 VE PUMP Fuel Screw Leaking

I was told to remove the fuel screw on the back of the VE pump to ease in removing the steel collar. I removed the screw and collar and reinstalled the screw on what I thought was back to factory specs. I started up the engine and it idle way to high. I backed out the idle screw all the way and still no change. I figured that I had turn it in to far so I started backing out the fuel screw. It wouldn't idle down and fuel started to leak out from behind the fuel screw. I had to turn it back to stop the leak. Now when ever I try starting it I see fuel leaking out from the back of the pump. Once the engine idle's up then it pretty much stops leaking except maybe a few drops here and there. What did I do. This is my first cummins which is a intercooled 93 1st gen. that I've installed it in a 93 F350. The truck I pulled it out of was a 93 D250 and It was running fine until the 518 puked the overdrive. I was getting 20mpg. Since I've put it in this ford I've only been able to get 16mpg with a max speed of 65. I've replaced the 518 with a lockup 618 and the only other thing diffrent is the rearend gearing which is a 4:10 vice the 3.73 that was in the dodge. Would changing the 4:10 to a 3:55 give me back the power and fuel milage? Any help would be eagerly taken advantage of.

Where to begin? There's a pretty noticeable difference between the 4.10 and 3.54 gears. Don't know where the 3.73 came in, but not from Dodge on a 1st gen. It won't go very fast without a working overdrive and 4.10s.

The throttle linkage is always a good place to get some better power. Make sure you have full travel on the throttle by adjusting it to remove any slack and have someone sit inside moving the accelerator pedal while you watch it to make sure. You can move the connection to the other hole in the throttle lever on the pump, to get more travel, if the adjustment doesn't work enough.

Hi Fordcummins, welcome aboard! It sounds like you need to pull the screw back out, and change the o-ring on it. It may have gotten chewed up when you pulled it before. Save yourself a bunch of hassle, get the complete kit, it's about $20. That way, you have all the seals you need for the pump. Any Bosch authorized fuel shop should have it. I think the # is DGK-121.
