I did sumpin' wrong

Postby nojackwayne » Wed Nov 12, 2008 10:23 pm

I finally got to my 16cm housing for my h1c. got the whole turbo off the truck, and the 18.5 is REALLY on there! poked, prodded, and fooked around. So my buddy shows up and lends a hand. DUMB ideas ensue. :x
I tap the exhuast side shaft(I know, I know!), it doesnt work. put the turbo in the vice and try to tap housing off all the way around, like TST says. it dont work. finally, I heat the old housing with the torch and really start to hit it harder. GENTLY harder. It finally comes off. I was spinning the intake side while doing all this . never jammed any blades on the housings, not enough to stop them hard anyways.
Got it back together, put a little oil in the hi press. side inlet. Fired it up, sounded good. took it out, idled it around and took it to the main road.
rolled on the throttle a little bit and got 10-12 lbs. fast then IT DROPS IN 5 SECONDS to ZERO. F#$% What happened? I idled to the shop, and killed it with the hood up. As the turbo wound down, it wasnt the regular high pitched whistle. More of a lower whiiiiiiirrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Checked the intake side and it spins okay. a tiny bit stiffer than stock.
Quit it for the night.
did I bend the shaft tapping it? screw the journal bearings? Do I have to rebuild it now? F%#*
sorry for the book, I need some advice. I will tear into it tomorrow
P.S. I have learned a couple things
A. Dont listen to your buddy with no clue(welders!)
B. dont listen to your buddies friend or,
C. the closest local turbo guru or,
D. myself sometimes! :(

I would take the elbow off that feeds the IC tube and see if you droped the o-ring while it was apart.

Don't ask why I would think of this.

You said this.

More of a lower whiiiiiiirrrrrrrrrrrrrr

That sounds like the turbo non muffled by intake tubing or exhaust tubing. Which would mean a big air leak for the sound to come threw. The big air leak could be the cause of lost boost.

That pissy O-ring has gotten a few guy's. Most won't own up to it eather.

well I looked at it this morning, the o ring on the comp side looked good, but I think I had an exhuast leak on the outlet side. I figured "what the hell, see what it does this morning" Took along yesterdays accomplice for a quick spin. I thought if things go south, I want to be close to the shop still! Guess what? It spooled up great and it held together. got 26-28lbs. out of it. I think I pussed out yesterday and talked myself into something really wrong. ;)
the only thing that bothers me is when I shut it down. It has a weird sound still. kind of grumbly. drove it as the parts runner all day and seems fine though. Is it possible when I hit the shaft getting said housing off, I moved the journal bearings? could they move? IDK PS ground the stock pin for more fuel. now I can touch 30psi :)
