How to stop exploding turbos from going to an engine

Postby cummins king » Tue Nov 25, 2008 9:41 pm

I'm starting to work on my truck and i'm looking for some ideas on how to stop the turbo shards from going into my air to air cooler or even into my engine.

I'm just getting a bit worried because of the boost i'm building and i don't want to wreck the motor, if one breaks

I was thinking of some wire mesh welded into a pipe after the turbo but before the air to air.

Any ideas would be great!

CK, what do you expect from a 2nd gen guy? ;)

I wonder if you could fab up a bucket like thing, something that swirls the air and separates anything heavy in the airflow? Like a centrifugal strainer.
I think it will add a lot of turbo lag though with the extra plumbing.

I think you need something that would shut the air off or devert it like the traps you can put on exhaust so you can flip a switch and run open headers or full exhaust. The problem would be having something that would sensor turbo malfunction.

Maybe i'm just over worried about the idea, the air to air should stop most of it,

But good ideas

I had a wastegate malfunction one time and ran over 95+psi. I didn't blow any turbos up even at that level, but I did blow my exhaust apart. LOL In a twin setup you are pretty safe to 110psi or so if your turbos are balanced which yours should be close to being. Now a single pushing 60+ is a time bomb.

Yeah I don't think you're building much boost to be worried about it. I think about the only thing you can do is not use junk turbo's. Even though a brand new high dollar charger will pop as well. Most junkyard chargers with high miles aren't the best thing to use when you're chasing 700hp, #2 only   .

did i hear gilbert correctly ? suggesting new parts and saying you should use the best of the best to boot ? what has bills old lady done with the real bill ???????????? lol

i think it is actually cheaper to do it right the first time

will be in the long run anyways

but the best benifit of using great stuff is that you get to use great stuff!

thats why bosch manuf the p-pump ! ! ! ! ! !

if you have not tried tuning one of those you have no idea what you have been missing out on. wonder how many big singles a tweaked out p pump has kilt?

how about ve motors? how many big singles have been granaded behind a small mech rotry?

What if you bubble all of the air from the turbo through a water reservoir, like a bong?
