300-325hp

Postby done_my way » Sun Nov 30, 2008 4:56 pm

Hello all. Newbie here, dont even have a Cummins yet. Am looking at a couple 1st-gens, so it is in the works. When I buy one, it will be a 92-92 W250 5-speed. Not a HP junkie, just a nice DD and occasional light-duty tow rig. Would like 300-325+/- hp. I know gages first, 4" exhaust, 366 spring, Denny T stage II fuel pin and pump mods. I am a stack junkie (and the wife likes them too...), so 5" strait cut with rain caps it is. I have read about a PDR HX-35 as an upgrade and is capable of my goals. I am sure someone with knowledge will reply to this, and I thank you in advance.

yah an hx-35 should do you good, i would think... i run a pdr s300 and i am very happy with it, i would suggest go bigger than what you think you need that way your more reluctant to outgrow it...

but, if your still interested in an hx-35 i have one used that i am trying to sell :D

I think an HX-40 would be a solid choice for a DD and occasional tow rig. Sounds like you won't be crankin enough fuel to blow it up. Personally, with the demands you have of the truck your gonna get, I'd just go with a compressor upgrade. I think gillet diesel still sells em.

I'd say get some injectors too. My DDP4s got me over 300hp and are nice and clean. PODs or 6x16s can get you there if you aren't worried too much about egts while towing.

Sorry, no spray. Just good, old-fashioned mechanical power. Any advantage of a PDR HX-35 over a compressor upgrade? Wastegate recommendations? If a compressor upgrade on the stock turbo, which stage? III, IV from who, HTT?

On paper, theoretically, with mods mentioned in my first post, would 300-325 be feasible? I dont wanna bomb it just to see if I can, or to see how many more jobs I can work to support the power gremlin inside us all...

Oh, other than excessive boost on a stock top-end, the advantage of the aforementioned s300 is??? Allows for injector upgrades? As a DD, thats what I want it to be. I already have one truck in the garage I cant drive; dont need another. Thanks for all input/suggestions

Stock IC injectors will limit your power output to the high 200s, though a few have dynoed 300+ with stockers. I think that puts unnecessary strain on the injector pump. If you go with even 190s, you will relieve much stress on the pump, and help it last longer. WIth today's fuels, it needs all the help it can get in that regard. You will do even more stress relief with bigger sticks.

I think a compressor upgrade would be the most bang for the buck in the turbo department, and all you need for 300-325hp. More than that, and you may need a HX40 or S300. I your turbo is worn, and you are going to get a new one, the PDR HX35 would be a good one to get. I had one on a 91, and liked it.

You're on the right track for the exhaust. I would just grind my own fuel pin, but if you've never done it, I might see letting someone else do it.

Dont discount the advantages the nonIC trucks have- larger injectors and better timing to start. You'd likely need an intercooler to stay cool at 300hp, but 275 is doable.

Bigger sticks, as in DDP stage IV's? Or a New Era (something)? As stated, not looking to repel mosquitos or anything of the like. Just an easily controlled EGT-wise engine. Or do I have to deal with trade-offs? Once again, thank you all for the input.

Oh, how smoky would 190's be with a better flowing turbo? Idle haze? What type/style/mfgr. of compressor upgrade, if stock turbo is ok? Wastegate cm?

I had 190's in my 92 and a compressor upgrade and a 16cm non wastegated exhaust housing and it didn't haze at idle but my injection pump wasn't turned up much either w/ Bully Dog fuel pin.

Changed my mind. No more stacks. Intake will be an ASA Modifieds. Exhaust man. will be an ATS or the like 3-piece. Full 4"-downpipe and a 4" out the back replacement exhaust. Will the 4" downpipe require a HX-40 turbo? I dont want any downpipe restrictions from the turbo. What style HX-40? Gated? I would rather do it once and be happy, but I have no idea on the 64/71/12 lingo that I see here. That doesnt translate into airflow or fuel compatability to me. I dont mind spending the $$$ to do it right once, be it pricey injectors or a turbo. Also dont want to open it up for studs or fire-rings. Why yes, I do want it all!!! LOL

The stock filter will support 300hp if you open up the intake tube into the rad support. Plus it will filter better and help make more hp than the ASA thing sucking hot air from the engine bay.

I can't believe they are getting $250 for that thing.
